Yes - it now takes much longer for me to use my preference (pages from the UK only).

Yes, and what's more: If you have Google in English, you don't get the web option by clicking on Search Tool. You can search for German websites but to do this, you have to use the Advanced Search option which is a real hassle.
Any ideas how we could "convince" Google to go back to the old left sidebar ...?
Regards,
Irene

I agree. Why did they do this?

Windows tools on a Mac? Nov 26, 2012

Can I use your Multifultor on a Mac as well?

Surely not with an Apple OS, sorry. Probably it works with a Boot Camp/Windows combination, but I have got no feedback for this scenario so far.

Google is an enterprise, not a tool provider for translators Nov 26, 2012

Google offers the so-called CSEs (customizescse search engines), though.

Not that it automatically changes anything, they don't seem to answer anything there lately.

google.com does not have left side bar.
Local pages have.

I did not read all posts here, sorry in advance if I repeated it.

Ali, can you please provide an example?
Whether I use e.g. google.co.uk or google.cz, it is not there.

An enterprise, yes but... Nov 26, 2012

According to their principles, the first one is

"1. Der Nutzer steht an erster Stelle, alles Weitere folgt von selbst."

Sorry, I only seem to be able to find the German version, but anyway, if Google claims "The user comes first" then of course they should take their users' requests and requirements into account.

Well I can definitely say that google.com never had a sidebar.

But as for the other local pages there is something going on in google because google.ru and google.kz also had sidebars but they both do not have them now. They have an upper menu called "search tools" and under that menu each local page offers different combinations.

Google.cz offers location, time and kind of searches under "search tools".

Turkish Google still has sidebar.

I think they are deleting sidebars one by one and creating an upper menu (scrolling search tools).

Who are the Google users anyway? Nov 26, 2012

Only 0.000...1 percent of the users are translators. The user community targeted by Google consists of the people who are potential buyers. Buyers of the products offered by paying advertizers.

"... if Google claims "The user comes first" ... they should ..."

What is the standard claim in published translator profiles? Or in "information" about a new washing powder? Is it the truth or just advertisement?

Maybe you are right. But it is difficult to discern that from home. Google looks at your IP address and your language setting. You may fake your language setting but not your IP, so Google knows in wich country/region you are located. At least the ranking of the hits depends on such info.

User (in relation to their search engine) is anyone interested in information. If Google cares about something (someone) else, then they should e.g say "customer" or "advertiser". Anyway, I would beg for "Privacy policy" statements (as quoted) to be free from advertisement - I can imagine in some scenarios (re privacy) you could make legal claims based on (un)precise formulation of these.

You may fake your language setting but not your IP

Actually you may - you can use e.g. Security Kiss Tunnel ( www.securityKISS.com ) to use a different (foreign country) IP.

(PS Rolf, thanks for the Multifultor advice, I was able to move further, but not tested everything yet.)
