I didn't intend for this post to be a 'how to get rich guide'. There are plenty of 'how to succeed' guides for translators. I think people should look there for advice and tips (like I did years ago). Rather, I wanted to share my experiences last year and what I learned. Maybe those many translators that you are referring to could try something different? That in a highly competitive translator's market in Europe, being "reliable and certified" doesn't mean much in terms of very high earnings. I was just making comparisons. You said your rates were high, why did you have to work 16 hrs/day then?

Since I reckoned you had definitely put your finger on it, Lingua 5B, I've just rung the police to report a missing Merc. But when I was unable to tell them the registration, the colour, the model or any details whatsoever, they were rather rude and simply hung up on me.

[Edited at 2018-01-23 11:35 GMT] that is 100.000 euros, one must surely work 16 hours per day in my opinion. | | | Lingua 5B Bosnia and Herzegovina Local time: 20:39 Member (2009) English to Croatian + ...

[Edited at 2018-01-23 11:35 GMT] that is 100.000 euros, one must surely work 16 hours per day in my opinion. If I had to hire someone for services (any kind, say a mechanic, translator or any, doesn't matter) and I knew this person was overworked with 16 hr/day shifts, I would never hire them as I couldn't trust such an overworked person can provide quality work.

... DJ's doing this in the thread, by any means, but by association it reminds me of a long time ago when a friend of mine, who had done very well for himself and wanted to tell me about it, rang me and said, "Hey, listen to this", whereupon I heard an echoey "clok-clok-clok-clok-clok-clok-clok-clok" for nearly a full minute, and then he said, "That was me walking the full length of my teak floor in the living room." | | | Tom in London United Kingdom Local time: 19:39 Member (2008) Italian to English Not friendly | Jan 23, 2018 |

My part-time freelancing for direct clients brought me some $32K gross (pretax) last year, whereas back-of-the-envelope calculations with agencies throw icy-cold water over the "Big Win" plan, so I'd rather mum's the word! ...A wrong country or a niche, perhaps. You did mention 'I “became” DJHartmann Translation'--did you go for a small business as an agency/LLC? This educated guess would explain a few things)

DZiW wrote: You did mention 'I “became” DJHartmann Translation'--did you go for a small business as an agency/LLC? This is more to do with the Australian business environment. I have registered as a business here and charge Australian clients GST. I do not want to give up being a good translator to become an agency. What I meant about that was I gave my full 100% focus on my work, at the cost of my wife and family. | | | Pages in topic: < [1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9] > | To report site rules violations or get help, contact a site moderator: You can also contact site staff by submitting a support request » Reflections on 2017, my first $US 100,000+ year from translation Protemos translation business management system | Create your account in minutes, and start working! 3-month trial for agencies, and free for freelancers!
