I already had some fairly good knowledge of industrial machinery, construction and occupational health and safety acquired through earlier jobs. As my translation career developed, I found out I had a knack for certain subject matters and since I liked working with them, I tried as much as possible to be the go-to person for those. Overall, I think experience is what will ultimately help you specialize. I have trouble imagining a novice translator being specialized in anything (I know I wasn't - I was just trying to get more work in some fields I was more comfortable with), although even novices have a knack and/or a preference for some subject matters. ▲ Collapse
