Hebrew to English: Translation of Kabbalistic Ilanot

Our knowledge of Coppio’s travels is largely based on the colophons written in his distinctive handwriting on various manuscripts. Of two of his journeys we may be certain: the first to Libya and Tunisia, and perhaps even Italy, and the second to the valley regions of Drâa and Sous in Southern Morocco. From his description of his first journey in 1709, we learn that the objective of the trip was the acquisition of kabbalistic works and their transfer to Morocco.

Since wandering from my home as a flying bird, as a wandering swallow, God has brought me here to the city of Ṭarābulus (Tripoli), may God protect her, a city of wise men and of scribes. And I found him whom my soul loves, i.e. the Idra Rabba (Great Assembly) with the ARI Z”L’s interpretation, and an additional interpretation by the Rabbi, the all comprehending, the Divine kabbalist, our honorable teacher, our rabbi, the Rabbi R. Yaakov Ben Hayyim Tzemach ,may he be protected and redeemed by the Merciful One.

Bio

I was raised in Israel by American parents, going back and forth between the States and Israel, and therefore both English and Hebrew are native to me. I specialize in the translation of academic articles with a focus on Jewish history, philosophy, Kabbalah, and Talmud, in addition to original sources and manuscripts. My recent projects include the translation of a series of Jewish amulets from the 17th and 18th centuries, and prior to that, editing and formatting an article on psychoanalysis and Kabbalah. Currently, I'm translating for the Israel Science Foundation-supported Ilanot Project, which catalogs kabbalistic cosmological diagrams.
