You will all be delighted to know (well, OK, maybe it won't be the high point of your weekend, but at least this is a positive note that I am bringing in here) that I have finally resolved my printer problem. This printer is new, so no, Neil, I shan't even think of getting a new one, especially since I am fiercely against the "single use" attitude to hardware that the manufacturers would like to prevail (don't fret, I know you were joking).

For once I actually worked all the way through the "help" section in my attempt to solve the problem, which took its time and was a fat lot of good. Worked it out for myself in the end.

Macs help Jul 8, 2011

Agree with the above poster who said there is less stress with a Mac, but since I use MemoQ, I still need to have Windows installed. Inevitably, computer problems almost always seem to occur when I go over to the dark side (and the deadline is tight, of course)!

slow payers Jul 8, 2011

Computer malfunctions and tight deadlines I can deal with. I have two computers and do not stress over time, but late payers I have to chase and that is a waste of time!

+1

I switch over with a backup computer in case of a computer malfunction and come back to it later on and I manage tight deadlines with much more ease than later payers who use delaying tactics - I tend to clear them for my work schedule with better payers as soon as I can sometimes I have to accept work from slow payers but I don't enjoy it as much

People should consider using a Mac. It is a little more expensive at first, but completely pain-free and reliable, and it definitely last longer.

That's what I'm thinking about.
However, doesn't a Mac cause compatibility issues with client's software/documents?

computer! Jul 8, 2011

tight deadlines are stressful but it's normal, part of the job. However, a computer disaster or crash that takes time out of your work! and you have no control over it...add that to a tight deadline! nightmare!

Computer malfunctions are caused 99% by Humanware Jul 8, 2011

I fix my computer's issues by myself.

From my experience, if you have issues with your computer it's because you are not using common sense with it.

Since computers are designed by humans, ultimately this is true…

I used to think the same way. My last computer broke down after a year and a half. I thought it was my fault. I did a search on the Internet and found that that model had a manufacturing fault and every single one of them will malfunction after about a year and a half.

So I don’t buy it. Yes, it is ultimately always human error because even computer designers are human, but the human who is at fault is not necessarily the end user.

In memoriam
Internet unavailability Jul 9, 2011

The most frustrating for me is definitely when my Internet service provider (Orange) suddenly won't work (not too often, thank God) and issues silly and untrue messages about "socket error", "wrong address" and other nonsense, and "help" at X pence per minute from Mumbai and so forth leaves one totally helpless.
