"When I get sick..." is much too vague. Of course it depends how sick you are.

All depends on what I have. As EvaVer says, if it is "only" a cold then business as usual. But if I do not feel very well at all, I just let my customer know and take a couple of hours off and reschedule the delivery. Everything is possible when you talk to people.

Fortunately, I do not get sick very often - Touch a big piece of wood☺

I learned the hard way. Once when I was in the hospital (14 years ago), I told my client where I was and they pulled an enormous three-month project out from under me. Never again!

It depends on the illness, of course. In theory, I will carry on, if not possible, I would try to renegotiate a new deadline and, as I have the habit of delivering before time, I will expect a certain level of understanding and sympathy from my long-term customers. So far, I've pretty much worked through anything but I have to stop when dealing with ocular migraines, I'll probably get one every few years but when it happens you just can't work because of the vision disturbance (scotoma) and the ... So far, I've pretty much worked through anything but I have to stop when dealing with ocular migraines, I'll probably get one every few years but when it happens you just can't work because of the vision disturbance (scotoma) and the most painful headache. Last year in August I had a very bad case of shingles which lasted for five weeks… It has to be really pretty bad before I decide not to work for the day. In over 40 years I had 4 days of bed rest because of back pain (disk hernia) + 5 days in the hospital for surgical removal of thyroid nodules: I reckon that’s quite a good average!Collapse

Try to keep working/going until I'm really too (expletive deleted) ill to continue. As Jack mentions above, "sick" is much too vague.

I once broke my arm in a motorbike accident and finished a project I was working on lying in my hospital bed with my arm in a sling the same day as I came out of surgery.

Wouldn't it be great if we could just ask someone at Proz.com to take over when we get sick? The revenue could be split between the sick person and the substitute. If everyone did that, no one would have to suffer. At least it would limit it.

Depends how sick, and when the next deadline is.

Even though my migraines are comparatively mild as I get older, they play havoc with my work. So if possible, I take my medication and go to bed, then carry on next day. If I have a deadline, I do the best I can on medication, but warn the client to proofread it VERY CAREFULLY, especially any dates and numbers.

I fell and twisted an arm and hurt my back a few winters ago. I had a rushed job, and my office chair was the most comfortable seat in the house, even better than my bed! It was business as usual.

I have had to give up with 'flu once or twice - the screen swims and I simply cannot concentrate.

Most of my clients appreciate that I can't deliver the usual quality - or at all - when I am ill, so we work out from case to case what to do about it. Luckily it doesn't happen often!

I mean to finish the current project then take time off until I feel better, but, so far, I haven't been sick long enough to take more days off after the current project is done. I usually end up delaying other responsibilities (like household chores) to meet the deadline while resting more to get it done.

Depending on how sick I was, I would try to finish the current project and then refer any further inquiries to a colleague for as long as necessary.

Do the best I can.
Last time I came down with flu, now 16 months ago, one of my clients was very persistent and demanded, I completed the job no matter what.

I did; the quality may have been lacking - and I do not take jobs from that client any more.

A flu or a severe infection? Sep 29, 2017

It depends a lot on what "sick" is. If I catch a flu or a soar throat, etc. that won't stop me from working. I'm at home anyway, so no excuses for not working in these cases. In case of something more serious, like a stone in the kidney, a broken finger, etc., then of course I can pass the work to some colleagues, who will gladly finish them for me, or inform the client, deliver the partials, and they will find someone to finish it. I can only recall one or two events of the sort in the past 30 ... See more
