Congratulations on passing the Dip Trans with distinction - that's a great achievement!

Regarding your question about the International School of Linguists (ISL) for the DPSI: both CIOL and ISL are recognised awarding bodies for the DPSI qualification, and courts and other legal settings in the UK generally accept both. The DPSI (Diploma in Public Service Interpreting) awarded by ISL carries the same professional weight as the one awarded by CIOL.

As for the exam difficulty: the DPSI Law option is challenging regardless of which body you sit it with. It involves a written paper and a spoken component. Given that you already have a Dip Trans with distinction and 5 years of interpreting experience in courts and NHS, I think you are well-placed to tackle it.

My suggestion would be to contact ISL directly to enquire about their preparation materials and exam dates. Some candidates also find it helpful to join study groups or contact the NRPSI (National Register of Public Service Interpreters) for guidance on the process.

Hi there,
I have been working as a translator in the UK for about 5 years, and also as an interpreter [courts and NHS]. When I started I did not have the exams, because it was sort of an hooby for me, and also I already have an MA in literature from a good college in the UK, and published materials. Two years ago, I took the Dip Trans exam with CIOL, option law and literature, and passed with distinction. But, I had to repeat one of the options, out of being nervous and pressing the wrong bottom! Now, I would like to stake the DPSI [option law], as I need to get more work. So, in order to work with courts, I need to have that.... My question is, because I missed the deadline for the CIOL exam, now, I can only take it with the International School of Linguists. Anyone has experience of working with the International School of Linguists? In theoretical terms, it should be the same... But, I am not sure. Also, is the exam very difficult? I am very communicative, but sometimes forget key words... so, I am a bit afraid of the process... Many thanks for your replies!

So ... this is the latest brain-child of some penny pinching wizard who forgot several 'small details', the most important of which is that if you don't live 'locally' there is a very real risk that you'll get totally stumped by some casual 'local reference' that is total mystery for all 'outsiders'. Yes 'context matters' in interpreting also.

There was years ago a wave of 'outsourcing call centres' as far as possible and willy-nilly I a got a sample of the results.

I live in London. The one in England. Talking to someone in a call centre in Scotland was already enough to turn the dialogue into a comedy of errors, while expecting from a call centre in India to be helpful was bordering on optismisme délirant.

That kind of work is important - especially when you are the one lost for words in a foreign country - no doubts about that.

But the whole 'offer' is a farce or a barely disguised scam. Not in the sense that you will never get paid. More because you will end up investing A LOT of your own time and money to only get few peanuts as Return On Investment.

How much should you trust an offer that starts with 'WE provide professional equipment' and then expects YOU to provide 'a dedicated workspace ...., a private, separate room for working hours' IOW to turn part of your home AT YOUR EXPENSES into an interpreting booth.

BTW they forgot to mention that for that kind of work you must have a really good sound insulation - yet another fixed cost - and that doesn't come cheap either!

'We also provide you with a good enough internet connection ...' No wait, that's another fixed cost that goes out of your pocket!

The crucial bit they 'forgot' to specify: I could bet the house that the 'payment' is in fact per minute of interpreting, and whoever after reading this 'offer' expects to always be paid for the whole 8 or 6 hour shift is in dire need of an urgent refresher course on 'modern business practices'. I can't see in this 'offer' ANY differentiation between 'waiting time' [doing nothing and just being ready] and time of 'effective work'. Guess why.

The typical 'party trick' for this kind of operation is to grossly oversubscribe the number of 'service providers' to be sure to always have someone available at times of 'peak demand' - and pay a big fat nothing to those who are twiddling their thumbs while 'ready and waiting'.

Compared to previous elements, the confusion about which time zone applies to what and the hourly rates that make any Mc Job look appealing are of no importance.

Sadly this is very much a 'sanity pattern': find the biggest mug that will cost the less – that’s the logic of (short-termist’s) economics.

Even before the rates. I have no time nor desire to watch that Youtube. Just off the top of my head:

Time zones specifically in Russia, all 11 of them, have nothing to do with it - it appears to be a mass mail about "global" recruiting so likely there are dozens of other languages and countries hit by this "opportunity". The originators must have taken extra effort to name a proper working language of the future victims. The physical message may be real but the content is borderline scam and/or illegal.

For starters, US VRI interpreters are REQUIRED to reside legally in the US at the time of the phone call to interpret for public institutions such as police, immigration, or Medicare, and companies providing such services must have proper government contracts complemented by a full list of their subcontractors and their whereabouts. Have you noticed "We can't work abroad?"

Corporate or private VPN? More power to you. Big Brother is watching. Bummer - it won't work in Russia anyway, and the IP address can still be tracked.

Not to be confused with private corporate policies about phone/Teams etc interpretation but even then I, a US citizen, had personally encountered a couple of instances when I couldn't do a conference from outside the US (not from Russia). Specific emails, often arriving together with the job offer, are sent in advance to confirm and sign in blood that you will be in the US at the time of the event. Not to mention that specific professional translators are hired for this kind of work, not random "waiters" for the call as VRI for the above purposes implies.

I won't even start on payment and taxation issues with Russia. At best, it's a hunt for Russians (Estonians, Martians, Lilliputians or whatever) scattered all over the world, including some not too successful digital nomads in the cheapest corners of the world, where 200 bucks a month may be a big help.

I wonder where is this Cool company registered? 3 pm to 7 am for which time zone and night time? On a second thought - no, I don't :D?

I think it's due to time zones.
If it's VRI, the translator is in Russia, within time zones UTC +2 to +12, while the people needing interpretation are in the USA within time zones UTC -5 to -8.
Thus, the range of time zone differences is more than 10 hours. 3 pm in California is 9 am the following day in Vladivostok, or 3 pm in New York is 11 pm in Moscow.

Hello,

I'm looking for advice and opinions regarding court interpreting in UK but I'm welcoming advice from court interpreters working in different countries.

I'm a Spanish interpreter in UK and today I've had a little bit of an argument about how my booking was managed. It was a court interpreting booking managed by an agency I freelance for.

It started a bit off because 15 minutes before the hearing was meant to start, I was still waiting for a link. Called the agency and they said court was going to send me the link. Court clerk called me and apparently it was a face to face booking but the agency said clerk requested remote. As usual, wherever the misunderstanding was, as interpreters, would not know, parties just blamed it on the other one. However, there was a remote booking for me to attend even though no the original one. I was booked for it so I did my job.

Then clerk told me that I was on the floating list meaning that you are required for the whole day and as many hearings as come up. This was never communicated to me by the agency. According to the agency, I was booked for one hearing, they were only provided with one reference number. In UK, court interpreting bookings are minimum 3h booking guarantee of payment.

The issue started when the clerk from the booking I did told me that I was going to be called by another clerk because there was another hearing that I was never booked for. This new clerk called me and I'm not going to get into how rude he was to me but he said that I was required to interpret everything that came up, that was what I was booked for and told me they do this all the time. I argued with him that this was the first time it happened to me, in fact, on a different occasion I did a favor for them interpreting in a hearing I wasn't booked for and it did backfired me as I didn't get paid properly. However, I offered that if he wanted to do a new booking with the agency, I could assist. He refused because according to him I was supposed to do it. I gave him a metaphor of an athlete sent to run one marathon and then finding out she needs to run another one just after the first one. Performance is not as good but maybe if the athlete knew she had to run two in a row, she would have taken different steps or prepare differently. He said that if 5 hearings came on and I was on the floating list I was supposed to do it. Now, I explained to him that all interpreting requires accuracy but especially court interpreting as mistakes can put other people's lives at a stake. I even agree to do it if it was to finish by 1pm which was the time I was booked until. However, he said that he will contact the agency and they will give me instructions... at the end, a different court clerk signed me off because whatever hearing they had was going to overrun 1pm. He repeated many times "that's why we book you off-contract."

I think there's been a big gap of communication between the court clerk and the agency here and I'm paying the consequences. If you want me to be the interpreter on the floating list for the day, the interpreter should know. Agency should ask for this information, it needs to be passed on to the interpreter and be booked for a whole day (5h or more). This way I can prepare myself to be all day ready for it. Is it so hard for them to give this information to the interpreter? I feel that most of the time, we as interpreters are kept in the dark about what's going on and we are like a ball they pass to one another. It feels really devaluating and unprofessional. I believe that this is an opportunity to change conditions in a profession that sits on grey areas most of the time, not only because of the self-employed nature of it but also because of the intermediate parties in between. I feel that the minimum is that interpreters know the nature of the bookings without having to be chasing parties. How could I know that I was booked for the floating list when the agency send me a confirmation for a single hearing? How could I know I was required for face to face interpreting when I got booked for remote interpreting? ...

So, fellow colleagues, what's your view on this matter? Am I losing my mind and requiring something impossible? (Because that's how they made me feel both the clerk and the agency). Am I crazy trying to ask for more information and more fair treatment? In this profession sometimes I feel completely blind but I do value my time and the quality of my interpreting and I always try to be professional. I think it should be both ways.

What would you have done in this situation? Anybody with similar situations as well? How well is interpreting regulated in your countries?

Just realized you were referring to physio therapy. I did have some instances when doctor was checking patient’s balance - reach your arms, touch your nose, walk around. I was always in consecutive mode. For SI the patient should have some earbuds or device to listen to you - complicated.

Older patients were often accompanied by their adult child who constantly interfered in communication so I had to translate what they are saying too - it’d be a summary or gist when things get too dense. This was pretty annoying as their adult child would be giving unnecessary comments, opinions etc. when not called for. They were just there happy to interrupt the session flow.

SI is not suited for situations without ear pieces, otherwise it’d be chaotic and counterproductive. You’ll mostly be in consecutive.

Thank you for responding!
Unless the provider is used to working with interpreters, they are not familiar with the interpreting modes. I was referring specifically to PT sessions in which the therapist is for instance, demonstrating reaching exercises. I decide that it is best to do simu for that particular utterance because they're speaking as they're demonstrating and consecutive would not work.

At the same time, during the same encounter, the therapist might give their patient some instructions. I use consecutive then.
Have you all have to switch back and forth during the same appointment? Do you think this might be confusing for the provider or the patient.
I believe switching modes in a different medical setting like you said, would be necessary also.

I did psychiatric/psychotherapy sessions, the setting and the mode would be established by the therapist and MD. I mostly did consecutive but in many ocassions I had to be very creative and interview the patient on my own just based on the doc input. For instance, cognitive check interviews that are very much language based, I had to create an exercise on the spot that will work for the TL.

The doc will tweak the interpreting mode depending on specific individual circumstances.

Aside from talking about their personal traumas etc, the worst thing was when patients didn’t want to engage/talk/cooperate, that was quite painful. As if someone forced them to be there, the U.S. doc told me it was a must for some patients, whereas in my country is optional. The meds are not optional, but the psychotherapy is.

In conclusion, just follow the doc input. The good thing was that I was always paid the full amount if the event was cancelled for any reason. Seems like tech moguls & Co. did not manage to introduce their mafia tools into these programs.

Hi every one and happy new year!!!. I haven't been here like in forever...
I am interested in learning from you practicing- medical interpreters, what has been your most effective mode for interpreting in PT/OT therapy sessions and why.
For me, at first I would do consecutive, but then found out that it doesn't work every time, so I kind of use both consecutive and simultaneous modes as I see fit.
What has been your experience?

1. Any event requiring an interpreter is international by default. Did you mean traveling abroad for the event?

2. Subject or level of attendees have nothing to do with your rate per se. It's your time that costs money, and you price your time based on your qualifications. You are not switching off half of your brain for "easy" assignments.

Organizers of major, high-profile, multilateral conferences usually know and offer/accept highest rates but everything depends on your negotiation skills and, at times, your willingness to step down a bit for some lower-level, less complex events and subjects. Always start with offering your top rate, regardless. Still, conference rates do have some room for negotiations but not a lot, just a little :-); it's up to you to decide whether the rate is still worth your while. For example, foreign assignments can have certain perks and attractions that may be worthy of your consideration.

In the US there is a federal table for per diem. You can get a certain amount/day in a city in West Virginia, while you will starve in NY or LA with the same amount. Same if you travel abroad. The per diem is based on the living standards in the place of work. In the US most of the time you get reimbursed within the federal per diem, based on the receipts. If you travel abroad for a conference, usually, but not always, the organizers provide housing (hotel) and meals, or at least breakfast.

1-Would you kindly explain the per diem: Do you mean that per diem is 75% of daily allowance? How much is the daily allowance
2- If the meeting seems like a formal session (the agency didn't share the organizer's name although I have requested that), shouldnt the rate be higher than $1000 daily?
3- when you provide service in two language pairs at the same event...does the rate change? Although I think I should refrain from that as it may be hectic

I have some very short videos (maybe 2 minutes max total) of people using Tanzanian Sign Language, and I need someone to translate for me.

This would be pro bono work as it is for a charity supporting deaf students in Tanzania.

I think they are saying very simple things like their name, hobbies and where they are from. In fact, I think the subtitles are a translation, but because they have been written in the third person (e.g. "she likes sewing" rather than "I like sewing") I can't be sure.

Hi Giuliana,

A rate of USD0.08 per minute is equivalent to USD4.80 per hour. I notice you are based in Argentina, but even then this appears to me to be very low for interpreting jobs. Compare [url removed] and [url removed]

Hi Giuliana,

I work with one company that pays $0.20 per minute, which is already quite low, but they have good volume of calls coming in and pay every fortnight. I'm in the process of starting with another one that pays $0.25, better, but still low. Some companies pay $0.35 or $0.40 per minute, but usually they require more experience (2+ years with OPI/VRI).

I would not work with any company that offers such a low rate of $0.08 per minute. I find it very insulting. OPI can be a very stressfull, depending on the call.

Google may be my friend, but it won't give me first-hand feedback from actual interpreters with local experience. I [i]thought[/i] ProZ forums might be a place to find some...

There are no many managers in the forums, as far as I know. The people who could give you feedback are event, venue or project managers as they deal with suppliers and equipment. Most interpreters don’t know who the supplier is, they just sit and interpreter.

I agree with others, seems Malmo doesn’t have many. You might need to use search tags in Swedish though.

Bearing in mind I am not from that area, I can't find any local suppliers on Google, but I can see there is one in Denmark (it should be well connected to Malmo) [url removed]
