왜냐하면 오늘 소개해드릴 게
제가 항상 여드름이
여기 턱 쪽에 엄청 자주 올라와요....
그래 가지고 이거를 맨날
관리를 하기 위해 가지고
하고 있는 천연팩이 있거든요.
항상 주 2회 정도 하고 있는데
이런 천연팩을 소개해드리려고
이렇게 영상을
소개를 해드리고 있습니다
이 팩의 이름은 율피팩이라고 하는데요!
밤의 속껍질 아시죠!!
그 밤의 속껍질을 율피라고 하는데
그 가루를 이용해 가지고 만드는
천연팩이라고 생각하시면 됩니다.
이 팩은 제가 알게 된 계기가
피부관리 채널로 유명한 유나님 채널을
통해 가지고 알게 되었는데요.
유나님이 소개해 주신 방법

제가 가지고 있는 노하우를
결합한 방법이니까
영상 끝까지 시청 부탁드리겠습니다.
먼저 필요한 재료는 율피가루
집에서는 항상 바르는 로션이 필요한데요.
거기에 저는 글리세린과
병풀추출물을 넣습니다.
만드는 방법은 율피가루를 반 스푼 넣고요!
거기에 로션과 병풀추출물로
농도를 조절하시면 돼요!
비율은 반반으로 해 주시면 됩니다.
이렇게 율피가루 알맹이들이
고르게 퍼지고 윤기가 돌면
거기에 글리세린을 네 방울 첨가해주고요.
여기서 주의할 점이
글리세린을 많이 넣으면 안 됩니다!!!
글리세린은 공기 중의 수분을 끌어 당겨가지고
피부에 수분을 채워주지만
만약 공기 중에 수분이 없으면
피부 속 수분을 당겨서
오히려 피부가 더 건조해질 수도 있거든요.
이렇게 완성된 팩을
5분 가량 냉장보관 해주시는데요.
그러면 차갑게 되어서
피부진정효과가 배가 되거든요.
이거는 저의 꿀팁이니까
꼭 챙겨가 주세요!!
얼굴을 세안한 후에
얼굴에 물기를 적당히 남겨 주고요.
그 후 팩을 도포해주세요!!
여기서 주의할 점은
피부결 방향대로 올려주시면 됩니다.
율피팩에 대해 가지고
설명 해드리려고 하는데요.
여기 율피팩에는 탄닌 성분이라는 게
굉장히 많이 들어가 있어요!
이 탄닌 성분이 여러가지 효능이 있어요.
예를 들면 피부향균효과,
피부 모공수축 효과,
피부각질제거 효과,
이렇게 대표적인 세 가지 효능이 있는데요.
그래가지고 여드름피부 아니면 모공성 피부,
각질관리에 굉장히 좋은 팩입니다.
그런데 제가 아까 만들 때
글리세린이랑 병풀추출물을 넣었잖아요!
여기서 또 다른 설명을 드리자고 하면
글리세린은 수분관리에 굉장히 좋은
성분 중의 하나입니다.
주로 저희가 화장품 전성분명을 보면
글리세린이 많이 들어가 있는 제품들이 굉장히 많아요.
왜냐면 저렴하고 효과가 좋고
또 알러지 반응이 굉장히 적은 물질이기 때문에
화장품 회사에서 굉장히 많이 쓰고 있는 성분이거든요.
그러한 수분보습에 좋은 성분
플러스
병풀추출물은 피부진정 효과에 굉장히 좋아요.
뭐 피부 염증이라든지 여드름 개선
이런 거에 굉장히 좋은 성분인데
그런 두 성분을 넣음으로써
여드름에도 좋고 피부 진정,
그리고 피부수분, 모공관리 효과가
있는 팩이라서 "1석 4조"의 효과가 있는
팩이라고 생각을 하시면 돼요.
제가 왜 주 2회마다
시간을 들여가지고 이거를 만드는지 이제 알겠죠???!!
저도 여드름이 많이 나는 날들이 가끔 있거든요...
뭐.. 예를 들면 가공식품을 너무 많이 먹었거나
아니면 제가 요즘 마스크를 끼잖아요...
그래가지고 제가 손을 얼굴에 굉장히 많이 대고 있어요. :(
그런 날들은 여드름이 갑자기 턱 주변이라든지
이렇게 광대뼈 쪽으로 여드름이 많이 나는 편인데
그런 여드름을 관리를 하기 위해서
하고 있는 팩입니다.
자!!! 이렇게 팩이 다 도포가 되었고요.
이러고 나서 한 15분에서 20분 정도 기다리면 되는데요.
저는 보통 시간을 굳이 재지는 않아요.
그렇지만 여기 약간 윤기 나는 겉면이 살짝 마르고
건조한 느낌이 없을 때
저는 팩을 이렇게 씻거든!
겉은 살짝 마르는데
속은 촉!!촉!!할 때
그러니까 거울을 보았을 때
윤기는 하나도 없는데 건조함이 안 느껴질 때
저는 보통 씻고 있습니다.
그게 보통 한 15분에서 20분 정도 있고요!
근데 이렇게 어느 정도 마른 상태에서 돌아왔는데요.
여기 보시면 살짝 이렇게
얇게 바른 데는 살짝 말라있잖아요.
두껍게 바른 데는 약간 아직 물기가 있어요.
제가 원하는 건 이런 느낌
살짝 마른 느낌!!!
이 때 해야 되거든요.
그러면 제가 씻는 법에 대해 가지고 말씀드리겠습니다.
왜냐면 이게 곡물가루이기 때문에
알갱이라는 게 있잖아요!!
그 알갱이가 잘못 씻으면
피부에 자극을 많이 주거든요....
저는 물리적인 각질 제거를 별로 좋아하지 않는 편이에요.(개인취향)
만약에 좋아하시는 분들은
이거를 그냥 참고 삼아 들어주시면 되고요.
좋아하지 않고 그런 거로 해 가지고
피부자극을 받으시는 분들
저처럼!!
이거를 참고해 주시면 좋을 것 같습니다!!
먼저 물 온도는 무조건 미온수로 해주셔야 해요.
미온수로 안 하고 차가운 물로 하게 되며
이 팩이 잘 안 씻기거든요.
세안을 하실 때는
무조건 물을 끼얹는다고 생각을 하시면 돼요!
절대 이렇게 비비시면 안돼요.
절대 비비시면 안되구요.
이렇게 물칠을 하면서
씻겨낸다는 느낌으로 해주시면 됩니다.

이거 하실 때 팁이 이렇게 하고나서

생각을 하시고 씻어주시면 돼요.
왜냐면 잘못하면 이렇게 남아 있는 부분들이
피부에 자극을 줄 수 있거든요.
제가 아무리 이렇게 한다고 해도
의도치 않게 이렇게 되는 경우가 있어요!!
그 때 여기에 남아있으면
이게 마찰이 돼요.
그래서 피부가 더 예민해지니까
꼭 이렇게 깨끗한 손 상태에서
씻어 주시면 됩니다.
어푸~~ 어어푸푸!!
그리고 뒤에를 씻어주실 때는
이렇게!!! 씻어주시면 돼요!
이거를 이렇게 가져다된다고 생각하시면
물을 적시고 이렇게 가져다 댄다고!

자 이렇게 세안을 마쳤는데요.

To take care of my skin problems,
I normally do
a home-made face mask
once or twice a week.
In this video,
I will talk
about that.
It is called Yulpi pack.
which is chestnut's inner shell!!
We call it Yulpi(the Korean name).
This natural home-made face mask is
made with chestnut inner shell powder.
At first, I knew this
through Yuna's Youtube Channel
which is famous and all about skin care.
What I am trying to do is
a blend between what she showed
in her channel
and my know-how.
Please stay tuned til the end!!
First of all, you need chestnut inner shell powder,
your regualr moisturizer
plus glycerin and
centella asiatica extract.
To make the face mask, put a half spoon of inner chestnut shell powder in a bowl!
To find the ideal concentration,
add the moisturizer and centella asiatica extract
My personal ratio between them is a 1:1 ratio.
After spreading the powder evenly
and it has a good glossiness like this,
add four drops of glycerin to the mixture.
Here is a word caution!!
DO NOT PUT A LOT OF GLYCERIN.
The glycerin helps to fill your skin
with moisture from the air.
But if there is no enough moisture in the air,
they will pull the moisture out of your skin
and make your skin dryer.
When you finish making it,
put it into a refrigerator around 5 minutes
because the face mask in cold temperature helps
to calm down your skin more.
This is my tip for all!
Do not forget it~
After washing your face,
leave some water on your face.
And then, cover your face with the mask!!
The most important thing to do is
to spread the mask with your skin grain.
Let me talk about
chestnut inner shell mask this time.
This mask contains
a lot of tannins.
This tannin has a variety of skin benefits:
Like skin antibacterial effects,
pore tightening and
dead skin removal.
Those three are the major skin benefits.
To make it simple, this mask is really good for
acne prone skin, skin with large pores and dead skin removal.
As you saw earlier when I made the mask,
I added the glycerin and the centella asiatica extract!
I would like to give you more details about those ingredients.
The glycerin is one of helpful ingredient
for your skin moisture.
You can see the glycerin
in a lot of cosmetic ingredient lists
because it is cheap, beneficial
and very low allergenic.
That is why many cosmetic companies use it in their products.
A combination of This good material for skin moisture
plus
centella asiatica extract is effective for skin-soothing.
Also, it is good for
acne or skin inflammation.
By mixing those two ingredients,
This face mask is perfect
for acne prone skin, skin soothing, moisturizing
and pore tightening
it is like killing FOUR birds with one stone.
Can you get why I am spending
my time on this twice a week???!!
Like you guys I also have breakouts sometimes.
Mostly, when I have too many processed foods
Or recently because of wearing medical face masks.
When I wear those masks, I tend to touch my face more often :(
Because of this, I tend to gain pimples around
my chin or my cheekbone area.
In order to solve these skin problems,
I do this face mask regularly.
Okay!!! I am done with spreading the mask all over my face.
After this step, you have to wait for 15 to 20 mins.
I do not measure the time.
However, when the mask's surface gets a bit dry
but not completely dry underneath,
I wash the mask off.
One more time, when the surface of the mask becomes matte
but the inside is still wet,
In other words, when the glowness of the mask disappears
and you do not feel any tightening,
it is a good time to remove the mask.
Roughly, it takes 15 to 20 mins!
I am back and the mask is dry.

with clean hands like this.

그다음에 컨실러 붓으로 이용해 가지고
열심히 펴 발라주겠습니다.
잡티야! 잡티야! 가려줘라!
깨끗한 피부를 달라! 가려져라.
하면서 하면 금방 끝나겠죠!
이제 파운데이션으로 얼굴 전체를 한번 커버하겠습니다.
파운데이션은 자기 피부 톤보다 한 톤
밝은 걸로 이용해가지고
살짝 얼굴을 밝혀주겠습니다.
여러 군데를 다 찍어 가지고
이제 파박파박~~ 두드려주면 되겠죠.
너무 시간을 많이 잡아 먹어가지고
그냥 2배속으로 진행하겠습니다.
진짜 현실 세계에서 이렇게 빨리 바를 수 있으면
얼마나 좋을까요!(아침 출근 때의 바람...)
아까 발랐던 파운데이션과 같은 색상의 컨실러로
눈 밑과 입술을 한 번 커버하도록 하겠습니다.
진짜 두 배속이 속이 시원한 거 같아요!!

진짜
이제 프라이머를 이용해 가지고
눈가의 기름기와 크리지 현상을 방지하도록 하고
남아 있는 기름기는 파우더를 이용해 가지고
정리하도록 하겠습니다.
눈썹도 잊지 말아주세요.
검은 색깔 아이브로우 펜슬을 이용해가지고
메이크업을 할 전체적인 밑그림을 드리도록 하겠습니다.
입술은 약간 자신의 입술에 비해서
오버하도록 그리고요.
옆을 살짝 찢는 거 잊지 말아주세요!
그리고 양쪽 눈에 동그라미를 그려줘가지고
검은 색깔 아이섀도우를 그릴 경계를 표시해줍니다.
이렇게 해주면 나중에 검은 색깔을 칠할 때
굉장히 쉬워가지고 도움이 되거든요.
꼭 잊지 말고 해주세요.
정말 웃기게 생겼네요....
하하하하.....
그다음에 빨간 색깔 섀도우를 이용해가지고
눈가 주변에 핏기를 한 번 칠하도록 하겠습니다.
보통 퀭한 눈을 보면 주변에 핏기가 조금 있잖아요.
모세혈관 같은게 터져가지고
그 부분을 저희가 표현하기 위해 가지고
빨간색깔 섀도우를 칠하고 있습니다.
꼼꼼하게 칠해 줄 필요.....는 없지만
그래도 나름 진하게
칠해주는 게 가장 중요한 거 같아요!
이제 방금 빨간색깔을 칠해준 부분에
약간 코랄 주황 색깔을 더해가지고
자연스러운 피색을 연출하도록 하겠습니다.
이 부분은 꼼꼼하게 안 발라도 돼요!
이제 검은 색깔 아이섀도우를 이용해 가지고
퀭한 눈을 연출하도록 하겠습니다.
(메이크업을 한) 눈을 보시면 중앙에 빈틈이 있잖아요.
그 부분을 꼼꼼하게 검은 색깔로 칠해주시고요.
(눈 메이크업을 한) 바깥에 있는 빨간 색깔과 주황 색깔
경계 칠했던 부근도 조화롭게 될 수 있도록
꼼꼼하게 칠해주시면 됩니다.
쓱쓱 그냥 발라주시면 돼요!!
이때 중요한 게 테두리 부분에도 꼼꼼하게 발라줘 가지고
조화롭게 해주는 게 진짜 중요해요.
왜냐하면 저희가 하고 싶은 거는
핏기가 있는 퀭한 눈이기 때문에
따로 놀지 않게 하는 게 중요하거든요!
아직 방금 칠했던 가장자리 부분이
조금 자연스럽지가 않거든요.
그래 가지고 진한 갈색을 이용해가지고
테두리에 한 번 더 칠해주도록 하겠습니다.
이렇게 하면 조금 더 퀭한 눈이 자연스러워 보입니다.
이제 검은 색깔 이용해 가지고
눈가에 있는 점막을 채우도록 하겠습니다.
밑에와 아래쪽을 꼼꼼하게 채워주는데요!
검은 아이라이너 같은 경우에서는
검은 섀도우보다 조금 더 어두운 색깔이 띄고 있거든요.
눈가 주변에 조금 더 한 번씩
검은 색깔을 칠해주면
안은 굉장히 검은데
겉으로 가면서 약간 핏기가 있는
퀭한 눈을 만들 수 있습니다.
만약 검은 색깔 립스틱이 있으신 분들은
검은 색깔 립스틱을 이용해 가지고
칠하는 방법도 좋은 방법일 거예요.
하지만 전 없어가지고 패스할게요.. ㅠ
자 어떠세요...?!!!
저 아까 검은 색깔 립스틱 없다고 했잖아요.
그래가지고 검은색 아이라이너로 입술을 채웠어요.
아까 찢었던 부분도 꼼꼼하게 메꿔주시고요.
위아래로 꼼꼼하게 검은 색깔을 칠해주세요.
얼추 이제 위아래가 검은 색깔로 맞춰졌져?!!
그리고 검은 색깔 아이섀도우를 통해가지고
입술에 제대로 안 발려있는 부분을
한 번 더 채워 주도록 하겠습니다.
아이라이너로 입술이 채워주게 되면
안 좋은 게 침 때문에 약간 지워지거나
안 그러지는 부분이 있더라고요.
제가 침이 좀 많은 편이라.....
그래서 그 부분은 아이섀도우를
이용해가지고 꼼꼼하게 채워주세요.
입술 한번 그냥 확! 찢어주시면 됩니다.
그리고 아까까지 칠했던 입술 외곽 주변에
회색깔 섀도우를 이용해 가지고
한 번 더 채우도록 하겠습니다.
이렇게 외곽을 채움으로써
입술이 조금 더 커 보이는 효과를 내도록 해 보겠습니다.
눈가 주변에 사용하였다는 주황 코랄색을 이용해 가지고
입술 외곽을 한 번 더 채우겠습니다.
이렇게 하면서 입술에 혈색을 조금 더 해 주면서
입술이 더 커 보이는 효과를 내도록 하겠습니다.
더 커졌져?!!
이제 눈썹을 그려 보도록 하겠습니다.
눈썹은 원래 하시던 방법으로 그리시면 됩니다.
짠~~!
아까 그렸던 눈썹에
검은 색깔 섀도우를 더 해 가지고
조금 더 선명한 눈썹을 표현하도록 하겠습니다.
한쪽 완성~~!
이제 다른 쪽도 쓱쓱 할게요!
하다 보니까 (눈썹) 외곽 쪽에
제대로 안 된 부분이 있어 가지고
다시 칠했어요.....:)
마스카라를 이용해 가지고
눈썹 결을 한 번 정리하도록 하겠습니다.
원래 마스카라가 고정력이라는 게 있잖아요!
그걸로 눈썹 정리하면 되게 깔끔하게 되더라고요!
이제 검은 색깔 섀도우를 이용해가지고
눈가 주변에 검은 색깔 핏줄을
연출하도록 하겠습니다.
그냥 모세혈관을 그린다고 생각을 하셔 가지고
줄을 하나씩 하나씩 그어주시면 됩니다.
대략 이렇게요!!
이제 반대쪽도 해볼게요!
이제 붓펜 아이라이너를 이용해가지고
눈가 주변에 쉐도우 부근에 있는
모세혈관을 저희가 칠하도록 하겠습니다.
원래 모세혈관이 굵어지면서
얇아지는 혈관이 있잖아요.
그 부분을 표현하기 위해서
안쪽만 굵게 칠하고 있는 중입니다.
어때요?!!
이제 똑같은 방식으로 반대쪽도 해볼게요!
정말 오래 걸려요 이거...
핏기를 표현한다면서
계속 등장하고 있는 오렌지 코랄색을
모세혈관 끝쪽에 저희가 칠하도록 하겠습니다.
이렇게 해가지고
조금 터진 모세혈관을 표현하려고
제가 칠한 것이기 때문에
생략하고 싶으시면 생략하셔도 돼요.
그냥 밖에 끝쪽에만 하나씩
색깔을 더 해 주시면 됩니다.
이것도 꽤 오래 걸렸던 것 같아요....
이제 한 쪽 끝났으니까
반대쪽도 똑같이 할게요.
스윽스윽 그냥 한 번씩
칠해주시면 됩니다!
이제 컨투어스틱을 이용해가지고
얼굴 윤곽을 잡도록 하겠습니다.
얼굴 외곽 쪽에 한 번씩 그어주시고요.
코 쪽도 잊지 말아주세요.
일부러 제가 약간 진한 색깔을
선택해보았는데요.
이런 할로윈 메이크업 아니면
언제 이렇게 진한 색상을
한번 사용해 보겠어요... 제가 ㅎ
정말 할로윈데이 포에버(FOEVER)이였으면 좋겠어요.
발라주실 때는 안쪽에서 바깥쪽으로
손가락으로 문대주시면 됩니다.
코 쪽은 약간 아이섀도우랑 섞일 수 있도록
해 주는 것도 괜찮은 거 같아요!!
이제 아까 발라두었던 컨투어 부근에
검은 색깔 섀도우를 더 해 가지고
약간 머디한 룩을 연출해보도록 하겠습니다.
아까 발랐던 외곽 쪽에도
한 번 스윽스윽 발라주시고요.
그리고 볼 쪽에 조금 깊게 파인
표현을 하기 위해가지고
볼 쪽에도 검은 색깔 섀도우를
발라주시면 됩니다.

This time, I am covering my entire face with foundation.
Use a foundation one shade lighter
than your face
to brighten your complexion.
And just apply it to some parts of the face
and tap it TaTaTaTa~~!!
I will speed the video up to twice the normal speed.
because it takes too much time.
I really wish that I could apply foundation at this fast pace
in reality(especially when I am preparing to go to work in the MORNING....)
Cover with a concealer that is the same shade as the foundation
under your eyes and lips.
This twice faster pace is so gratifying!!!

Seriously
I use a primer to prevent creases and
get rid of oil on my eyelids.
Then, I remove the leftover oil
with a powder.
It is a must to put the powder on the eyebrows too.
In this step, I make a rough sketch of the makeup
with a black eyebrow pencil.
Please make a little bit of an overlip
around your lips.
Also, do not forget to widen both sides of your lips!
Make a boundary for the black eyeshadow makeup
by creating a circle on both of your eyes.
It will help you make the next makeup step easier
when you put black eyeshadow on your eyes.
Please do not skip it.

Next, I will add a red color
around the eyes with red eyeshadow.
You will probably notice some blood red coloration around tired eyes.
since capillary vessels burst around tired eyes.
To make those kinds of eyes,
I apply a red eyeshadow.
You do not need to put
the eye shadow precisely around eyes
but It is important to make it obvious.
I create a natural blood red color
by adding orange-coral
in with the red eyeshadow.
This part does not have to be perfect.
With black eyeshadow,
I make a hollowed-out eye socket look.
You can notice an empty spot on my eye makeup.
Put the black eyeshadow in the space thoroughly.
The black eyeshadow has to be filled
to the edge of the eye makeup to blend well
with red eyeshadow and an orange coral eyeshadow too.
Just.. take easy!!
It is all about blending the rest of eye makeup
on the edge of eyes with the black eyeshadow.
That is because what I am doing is
making sunken eyes.
So, It looks better after blending it.
I think I need more work
on the part I applied a sec ago.
I am going to put some more dark brown eyeshadow
on the edge of it more.
Then, it will give a more natural sunken eyes look me on my face.
This time, I use a black eyeliner
to fill eyelash lines up.
Take your time to fill the upper lashline and waterline precisely.
The black eyeliner has a darker tone
than the black eyeshadow I applied.
When you fill the black eyeliner
on your eyes,
it is like the inner part is really dark and
you can see the blood red as you move toward
the edge of your eye makeup for the hollowed out eye socket look.
If you have black lipstick,
I highly recommend using it
for this step.
But, I skipped using black lipstick because I do not have.... :(
How do I look....?!!!
I told you guys that I did not have black lipstick.
So, I used the black eyeliner to fill my lips up.
Fill up your entire inner lips and both sides of your lips
which was drawn to widen your lip makeup.
I think my eyes and lip match with the black as I intended.
With the black eyeshadow,
I put it on part of my lips
that had been applied black eyeliner properly.
I think the eyeliner can be removed
a bit by saliva on your lips or
it can be hard to apply the eyeliner on the lip because of saliva.
It is because my mouth is too WET....
That is why I use the eyeshadow
to fill it up without any empty spots.
Plus, widen the side of your lips with the eyeshadow.
I am going to
add gray eyeshadow
around my lips.
It helps to make my lips look bigger
by applying it to the edge of my lip makeup.
I add the orange coral color on the edge
which I used for my eye makeup.
With this skill, my lips have a more bloody color
and looks bigger as an effect.
Can you tell my lips look bigger?!!!
Now, It is time to draw eyebrows,
Just do your own style of eyebrow makeup.

I am going to add the black eyeshadow
on my eyebrows
to create more defined eyebrows.
I completed one of them.

I brush the eyebrow hair lightly.
You know the mascara can keep hair in place!!
Therefore, it is helpful to utilize the mascara for your eyebrow makeup.
I am going to make
black blood vessels around my eyes
with black eyeshadow.
Just think how the blood vessels look like and
draw them piece by piece.
Like this!!
It is time for the other eye.
And I retouched the black blood vessels
on the eye makeup
with a brush eyeliner.
As you would expect, the capillary vessel is getting
thinner toward the end.
To make that shape, I draw the inner lines
placed on the eye makeup to be thicker in the center.
What do you think of this?!!!
Let me work on the other eye in the same way.
It takes some time....
Yet again the coral orange I keep showing
to create blood red and put it on the tip of blood vessels
I drew with the black eyeshadow.
The reason why I am doing this is to
make bursted capillary vessels
and you can skip this step
if you feel like it does not need it.
Simply by adding the color
on every single tip of the blood vessels
It takes a while too..... :(
I finished this side of eyes.
Let me do the work on the other side.
Just put the orange coral eye shadow
on the spots ance.
It is time for contouring
my face shape with a contouring stick.
Draw dashed lines on the side of your face.
Also, do not skip your nose.
I use a dark-tone contour stick
for a reason.
I mean halloween makeup is a special occasion for me.
For that reason, I want to make defined look
with this dark-tone contour stick.
I really wish halloween lasts forever.
When you spread it, just rub it
toward the side of your face with your finger.
For the nose, it would be better to blend
the contour with the eyeshadow around the eyes.
I am going to add
the black eyeshadow over the contour
to make a bit of a muddy look.
Just brush the black eyeshadow lightly
all over the side of your face.
To bring out our bone structure,
I blend the black eyeshadow
from my cheek
to another area far down.

The Yellow Wallpaper

It is very seldom that mere ordinary people like John and myself secure ancestral halls for the summer.
A colonial mansion, a hereditary estate, I would say a haunted house, and reach the height of romantic felicity—but that would be asking too much of fate!
Still I will proudly declare that there is something queer about it.
Else, why should it be let so cheaply? And why have stood so long untenanted?
John laughs at me, of course, but one expects that in marriage.
John is practical in the extreme. He has no patience with faith, an intense horror of superstition, and he scoffs openly at any talk of things not to be felt and seen and put down in figures.
John is a physician, and perhaps—(I would not say it to a living soul, of course, but this is dead paper and a great relief to my mind)—perhaps that is one reason I do not get well faster.
You see, he does not believe I am sick!
And what can one do?
If a physician of high standing, and one’s own husband, assures friends and relatives that there is really nothing the matter with one but temporary nervous depression—a slight hysterical tendency—what is one to do?
My brother is also a physician, and also of high standing, and he says the same thing.
So I take phosphates or phosphites—whichever it is, and tonics, and journeys, and air, and exercise, and am absolutely forbidden to “work” until I am well again.
Personally, I disagree with their ideas.
Personally, I believe that congenial work, with excitement and change, would do me good.
But what is one to do?
I did write for a while in spite of them; but it does exhaust me a good deal—having to be so sly about it, or else meet with heavy opposition.
I sometimes fancy that in my condition if I had less opposition and more society and stimulus—but John says the very worst thing I can do is to think about my condition, and I confess it always makes me feel bad.

So I will let it alone and talk about the house.
The most beautiful place! It is quite alone, standing well back from the road, quite three miles from the village. It makes me think of English places that you read about, for there are hedges and walls and gates that lock, and lots of separate little houses for the gardeners and people.
There is a delicious garden! I never saw such a garden—large and shady, full of box-bordered paths, and lined with long grape-covered arbors with seats under them.
There were greenhouses, too, but they are all broken now.
There was some legal trouble, I believe, something about the heirs and co-heirs; anyhow, the place has been empty for years.
That spoils my ghostliness, I am afraid; but I don’t care—there is something strange about the house—I can feel it.
I even said so to John one moonlight evening, but he said what I felt was a draught, and shut the window.
I get unreasonably angry with John sometimes. I’m sure I never used to be so sensitive. I think it is due to this nervous condition.
But John says if I feel so I shall neglect proper self-control; so I take pains to control myself,—before him, at least,—and that makes me very tired.
I don’t like our room a bit. I wanted one downstairs that opened on the piazza and had roses all over the window, and such pretty old-fashioned chintz hangings! but John would not hear of it.
He said there was only one window and not room for two beds, and no near room for him if he took another.
He is very careful and loving, and hardly lets me stir without special direction.
I have a schedule prescription for each hour in the day; he takes all care from me, and so I feel basely ungrateful not to value it more.
He said we came here solely on my account, that I was to have perfect rest and all the air I could get. “Your exercise depends on your strength, my dear,” said he, “and your food somewhat on your appetite; but air you can absorb all the time.” So we took the nursery, at the top of the house.
It is a big, airy room, the whole floor nearly, with windows that look all ways, and air and sunshine galore. It was nursery first and then playground and gymnasium, I should judge; for the windows are barred for little children, and there are rings and things in the walls.
The paint and paper look as if a boys’ school had used it. It is stripped off—the paper—in great patches all around the head of my bed, about as far as I can reach, and in a great place on the other side of the room low down. I never saw a worse paper in my life.
One of those sprawling flamboyant patterns committing every artistic sin.
It is dull enough to confuse the eye in following, pronounced enough to constantly irritate, and provoke study, and when you follow the lame, uncertain curves for a little distance they suddenly commit suicide—plunge off at outrageous angles, destroy themselves in unheard-of contradictions.
The color is repellant, almost revolting; a smouldering, unclean yellow, strangely faded by the slow-turning sunlight.
It is a dull yet lurid orange in some places, a sickly sulphur tint in others.
No wonder the children hated it! I should hate it myself if I had to live in this room long.
There comes John, and I must put this away,—he hates to have me write a word.
We have been here two weeks, and I haven’t felt like writing before, since that first day.
I am sitting by the window now, up in this atrocious nursery, and there is nothing to hinder my writing as much as I please, save lack of strength.
John is away all day, and even some nights when his cases are serious.
I am glad my case is not serious!
But these nervous troubles are dreadfully depressing.
John does not know how much I really suffer. He knows there is no reason to suffer, and that satisfies him.
Of course it is only nervousness. It does weigh on me so not to do my duty in any way!
I meant to be such a help to John, such a real rest and comfort, and here I am a comparative burden already!
Nobody would believe what an effort it is to do what little I am able—to dress and entertain, and order things.
It is fortunate Mary is so good with the baby. Such a dear baby!
And yet I cannot be with him, it makes me so nervous.
I suppose John never was nervous in his life. He laughs at me so about this wallpaper!
At first he meant to repaper the room, but afterwards he said that I was letting it get the better of me, and that nothing was worse for a nervous patient than to give way to such fancies.
He said that after the wallpaper was changed it would be the heavy bedstead, and then the barred windows, and then that gate at the head of the stairs, and so on.
“You know the place is doing you good,” he said, “and really, dear, I don’t care to renovate the house just for a three months’ rental.”
“Then do let us go downstairs,” I said, “there are such pretty rooms there.”
Then he took me in his arms and called me a blessed little goose, and said he would go down cellar if I wished, and have it whitewashed into the bargain.
But he is right enough about the beds and windows and things.
It is as airy and comfortable a room as any one need wish, and, of course, I would not be so silly as to make him uncomfortable just for a whim.
I’m really getting quite fond of the big room, all but that horrid paper.
Out of one window I can see the garden, those mysterious deep-shaded arbors, the riotous old-fashioned flowers, and bushes and gnarly trees.
Out of another I get a lovely view of the bay and a little private wharf belonging to the estate. There is a beautiful shaded lane that runs down there from the house. I always fancy I see people walking in these numerous paths and arbors, but John has cautioned me not to give way to fancy in the least. He says that with my imaginative power and habit of story-making a nervous weakness like mine is sure to lead to all manner of excited fancies, and that I ought to use my will and good sense to check the tendency. So I try.
I think sometimes that if I were only well enough to write a little it would relieve the press of ideas and rest me.
But I find I get pretty tired when I try.
It is so discouraging not to have any advice and companionship about my work. When I get really well John says we will ask Cousin Henry and Julia down for a long visit; but he says he would as soon put fire-works in my pillow-case as to let me have those stimulating people about now.
I wish I could get well faster.
But I must not think about that. This paper looks to me as if it knew what a vicious influence it had!
There is a recurrent spot where the pattern lolls like a broken neck and two bulbous eyes stare at you upside-down.
I get positively angry with the impertinence of it and the everlastingness. Up and down and sideways they crawl, and those absurd, unblinking eyes are everywhere. There is one place where two breadths didn’t match, and the eyes go all up and down the line, one a little higher than the other.
I never saw so much expression in an inanimate thing before, and we all know how much expression they have! I used to lie awake as a child and get more entertainment and terror out of blank walls and plain furniture than most children could find in a toy-store.
I remember what a kindly wink the knobs of our big old bureau used to have, and there was one chair that always seemed like a strong friend.
I used to feel that if any of the other things looked too fierce I could always hop into that chair and be safe.
The furniture in this room is no worse than inharmonious, however, for we had to bring it all from downstairs. I suppose when this was used as a playroom they had to take the nursery things out, and no wonder! I never saw such ravages as the children have made here.
The wallpaper, as I said before, is torn off in spots, and it sticketh closer than a brother—they must have had perseverance as well as hatred.
Then the floor is scratched and gouged and splintered, the plaster itself is dug out here and there, and this great heavy bed, which is all we found in the room, looks as if it had been through the wars.
But I don’t mind it a bit—only the paper.
There comes John’s sister. Such a dear girl as she is, and so careful of me! I must not let her find me writing.
She is a perfect, and enthusiastic housekeeper, and hopes for no better profession. I verily believe she thinks it is the writing which made me sick!
But I can write when she is out, and see her a long way off from these windows.
There is one that commands the road, a lovely, shaded, winding road, and one that just looks off over the country. A lovely country, too, full of great elms and velvet meadows.
This wallpaper has a kind of sub-pattern in a different shade, a particularly irritating one, for you can only see it in certain lights, and not clearly then.
But in the places where it isn’t faded, and where the sun is just so, I can see a strange, provoking, formless sort of figure, that seems to sulk about behind that silly and conspicuous front design.
There’s sister on the stairs!
Well, the Fourth of July is over! The people are gone and I am tired out. John thought it might do me good to see a little company, so we just had mother and Nellie and the children down for a week.
Of course I didn’t do a thing. Jennie sees to everything now.
But it tired me all the same.
John says if I don’t pick up faster he shall send me to Weir Mitchell in the fall.
But I don’t want to go there at all. I had a friend who was in his hands once, and she says he is just like John and my brother, only more so!
Besides, it is such an undertaking to go so far.
I don’t feel as if it was worthwhile to turn my hand over for anything, and I’m getting dreadfully fretful and querulous.
I cry at nothing, and cry most of the time.
Of course I don’t when John is here, or anybody else, but when I am alone.
And I am alone a good deal just now. John is kept in town very often by serious cases, and Jennie is good and lets me alone when I want her to.
So I walk a little in the garden or down that lovely lane, sit on the porch under the roses, and lie down up here a good deal.
I’m getting really fond of the room in spite of the wallpaper. Perhaps because of the wallpaper.
It dwells in my mind so!
I lie here on this great immovable bed—it is nailed down, I believe—and follow that pattern about by the hour. It is as good as gymnastics, I assure you. I start, we’ll say, at the bottom, down in the corner over there where it has not been touched, and I determine for the thousandth time that I will follow that pointless pattern to some sort of a conclusion.
I know a little of the principle of design, and I know this thing was not arranged on any laws of radiation, or alternation, or repetition, or symmetry, or anything else that I ever heard of.
It is repeated, of course, by the breadths, but not otherwise.
Looked at in one way each breadth stands alone, the bloated curves and flourishes—a kind of “debased Romanesque” with delirium tremens—go waddling up and down in isolated columns of fatuity.
But, on the other hand, they connect diagonally, and the sprawling outlines run off in great slanting waves of optic horror, like a lot of wallowing seaweeds in full chase.
The whole thing goes horizontally, too, at least it seems so, and I exhaust myself in trying to distinguish the order of its going in that direction.
They have used a horizontal breadth for a frieze, and that adds wonderfully to the confusion.
There is one end of the room where it is almost intact, and there, when the cross-lights fade and the low sun shines directly upon it, I can almost fancy radiation after all,—the interminable grotesques seem to form around a common centre and rush off in headlong plunges of equal distraction.
It makes me tired to follow it. I will take a nap, I guess.
I don’t know why I should write this.
I don’t want to.
I don’t feel able.
And I know John would think it absurd. But I must say what I feel and think in some way—it is such a relief!
But the effort is getting to be greater than the relief.
Half the time now I am awfully lazy, and lie down ever so much.
John says I musn’t lose my strength, and has me take cod-liver oil and lots of tonics and things, to say nothing of ale and wine and rare meat.
Dear John! He loves me very dearly, and hates to have me sick. I tried to have a real earnest reasonable talk with him the other day, and tell him how I wish he would let me go and make a visit to Cousin Henry and Julia.
But he said I wasn’t able to go, nor able to stand it after I got there; and I did not make out a very good case for myself, for I was crying before I had finished.
It is getting to be a great effort for me to think straight. Just this nervous weakness, I suppose.
And dear John gathered me up in his arms, and just carried me upstairs and laid me on the bed, and sat by me and read to me till it tired my head.
He said I was his darling and his comfort and all he had, and that I must take care of myself for his sake, and keep well.
He says no one but myself can help me out of it, that I must use my will and self-control and not let any silly fancies run away with me.
There’s one comfort, the baby is well and happy, and does not have to occupy this nursery with the horrid wallpaper.
If we had not used it that blessed child would have! What a fortunate escape! Why, I wouldn’t have a child of mine, an impressionable little thing, live in such a room for worlds.
I never thought of it before, but it is lucky that John kept me here after all. I can stand it so much easier than a baby, you see.
Of course I never mention it to them any more,—I am too wise,—but I keep watch of it all the same.
There are things in that paper that nobody knows but me, or ever will.
Behind that outside pattern the dim shapes get clearer every day.
It is always the same shape, only very numerous.
And it is like a woman stooping down and creeping about behind that pattern. I don’t like it a bit. I wonder—I begin to think—I wish John would take me away from here!
It is so hard to talk with John about my case, because he is so wise, and because he loves me so.
But I tried it last night.
It was moonlight. The moon shines in all around, just as the sun does.
I hate to see it sometimes, it creeps so slowly, and always comes in by one window or another.
John was asleep and I hated to waken him, so I kept still and watched the moonlight on that undulating wallpaper till I felt creepy.
The faint figure behind seemed to shake the pattern, just as if she wanted to get out.
I got up softly and went to feel and see if the paper did move, and when I came back John was awake.
“What is it, little girl?” he said. “Don’t go walking about like that—you’ll get cold.”
I thought it was a good time to talk, so I told him that I really was not gaining here, and that I wished he would take me away.
“Why darling!” said he, “our lease will be up in three weeks, and I can’t see how to leave before.
“The repairs are not done at home, and I cannot possibly leave town just now. Of course if you were in any danger I could and would, but you really are better, dear, whether you can see it or not. I am a doctor, dear, and I know. You are gaining flesh and color, your appetite is better. I feel really much easier about you.”
“I don’t weigh a bit more,” said I, “nor as much; and my appetite may be better in the evening, when you are here, but it is worse in the morning when you are away.”
“Bless her little heart!” said he with a big hug; “she shall be as sick as she pleases! But now let’s improve the shining hours by going to sleep, and talk about it in the morning!”
“And you won’t go away?” I asked gloomily.
“Why, how can I, dear? It is only three weeks more and then we will take a nice little trip of a few days while Jennie is getting the house ready. Really, dear, you are better!”
“Better in body perhaps”—I began, and stopped short, for he sat up straight and looked at me with such a stern, reproachful look that I could not say another word.
“My darling,” said he, “I beg of you, for my sake and for our child’s sake, as well as for your own, that you will never for one instant let that idea enter your mind! There is nothing so dangerous, so fascinating, to a temperament like yours. It is a false and foolish fancy. Can you not trust me as a physician when I tell you so?”
So of course I said no more on that score, and we went to sleep before long. He thought I was asleep first, but I wasn’t,—I lay there for hours trying to decide whether that front pattern and the back pattern really did move together or separately.
On a pattern like this, by daylight, there is a lack of sequence, a defiance of law, that is a constant irritant to a normal mind.
The color is hideous enough, and unreliable enough, and infuriating enough, but the pattern is torturing.
You think you have mastered it, but just as you get well under way in following, it turns a back somersault and there you are. It slaps you in the face, knocks you down, and tramples upon you. It is like a bad dream.
The outside pattern is a florid arabesque, reminding one of a fungus. If you can imagine a toadstool in joints, an interminable string of toadstools, budding and sprouting in endless convolutions,—why, that is something like it.
That is, sometimes!
There is one marked peculiarity about this paper, a thing nobody seems to notice but myself, and that is that it changes as the light changes.
When the sun shoots in through the east window—I always watch for that first long, straight ray—it changes so quickly that I never can quite believe it.
That is why I watch it always.
By moonlight—the moon shines in all night when there is a moon—I wouldn’t know it was the same paper.
At night in any kind of light, in twilight, candlelight, lamplight, and worst of all by moonlight, it becomes bars! The outside pattern I mean, and the woman behind it is as plain as can be.
I didn’t realize for a long time what the thing was that showed behind,—that dim sub-pattern,—but now I am quite sure it is a woman.
By daylight she is subdued, quiet. I fancy it is the pattern that keeps her so still. It is so puzzling. It keeps me quiet by the hour.
I lie down ever so much now. John says it is good for me, and to sleep all I can.
Indeed, he started the habit by making me lie down for an hour after each meal.
It is a very bad habit, I am convinced, for, you see, I don’t sleep.
And that cultivates deceit, for I don’t tell them I’m awake,—oh, no!
The fact is, I am getting a little afraid of John.
He seems very queer sometimes, and even Jennie has an inexplicable look.
It strikes me occasionally, just as a scientific hypothesis, that perhaps it is the paper!
I have watched John when he did not know I was looking, and come into the room suddenly on the most innocent excuses, and I’ve caught him several times looking at the paper! And Jennie too. I caught Jennie with her hand on it once.
She didn’t know I was in the room, and when I asked her in a quiet, a very quiet voice, with the most restrained manner possible, what she was doing with the paper she turned around as if she had been caught stealing, and looked quite angry—asked me why I should frighten her so!
Then she said that the paper stained everything it touched, that she had found yellow smooches on all my clothes and John’s, and she wished we would be more careful!
Did not that sound innocent? But I know she was studying that pattern, and I am determined that nobody shall find it out but myself!
Life is very much more exciting now than it used to be. You see I have something more to expect, to look forward to, to watch. I really do eat better, and am more quiet than I was.
John is so pleased to see me improve! He laughed a little the other day, and said I seemed to be flourishing in spite of my wallpaper.
I turned it off with a laugh. I had no intention of telling him it was because of the wallpaper—he would make fun of me. He might even want to take me away.
I don’t want to leave now until I have found it out. There is a week more, and I think that will be enough.
I’m feeling ever so much better! I don’t sleep much at night, for it is so interesting to watch developments; but I sleep a good deal in the daytime.
In the daytime it is tiresome and perplexing.
There are always new shoots on the fungus, and new shades of yellow all over it. I cannot keep count of them, though I have tried conscientiously.
It is the strangest yellow, that wallpaper! It makes me think of all the yellow things I ever saw—not beautiful ones like buttercups, but old foul, bad yellow things.
But there is something else about that paper—the smell! I noticed it the moment we came into the room, but with so much air and sun it was not bad. Now we have had a week of fog and rain, and whether the windows are open or not, the smell is here.
It creeps all over the house.
I find it hovering in the dining-room, skulking in the parlor, hiding in the hall, lying in wait for me on the stairs.
It gets into my hair.
Even when I go to ride, if I turn my head suddenly and surprise it—there is that smell!
Such a peculiar odor, too! I have spent hours in trying to analyze it, to find what it smelled like.
It is not bad—at first, and very gentle, but quite the subtlest, most enduring odor I ever met.
In this damp weather it is awful. I wake up in the night and find it hanging over me.
It used to disturb me at first. I thought seriously of burning the house—to reach the smell.
But now I am used to it. The only thing I can think of that it is like is the color of the paper! A yellow smell.
There is a very funny mark on this wall, low down, near the mopboard. A streak that runs round the room. It goes behind every piece of furniture, except the bed, a long, straight, even smooch, as if it had been rubbed over and over.
I wonder how it was done and who did it, and what they did it for. Round and round and round—round and round and round—it makes me dizzy!
I really have discovered something at last.
Through watching so much at night, when it changes so, I have finally found out.
The front pattern does move—and no wonder! The woman behind shakes it!
Sometimes I think there are a great many women behind, and sometimes only one, and she crawls around fast, and her crawling shakes it all over.
Then in the very bright spots she keeps still, and in the very shady spots she just takes hold of the bars and shakes them hard.
And she is all the time trying to climb through. But nobody could climb through that pattern—it strangles so; I think that is why it has so many heads.
They get through, and then the pattern strangles them off and turns them upside-down, and makes their eyes white!
If those heads were covered or taken off it would not be half so bad.
I think that woman gets out in the daytime!
And I’ll tell you why—privately—I’ve seen her!
I can see her out of every one of my windows!
It is the same woman, I know, for she is always creeping, and most women do not creep by daylight.
I see her on that long shaded lane, creeping up and down. I see her in those dark grape arbors, creeping all around the garden.
I see her on that long road under the trees, creeping along, and when a carriage comes she hides under the blackberry vines.
I don’t blame her a bit. It must be very humiliating to be caught creeping by daylight!
I always lock the door whencreep by daylight. I can’t do it at night, for I know John would suspect something at once.
And John is so queer now, that I don’t want to irritate him. I wish he would take another room! Besides, I don’t want anybody to get that woman out at night but myself.
I often wonder if I could see her out of all the windows at once.
But, turn as fast as I can, I can only see out of one at one time.
And though I always see her she may be able to creep faster than I can turn!
I have watched her sometimes away off in the open country, creeping as fast as a cloud shadow in a high wind.
If only that top pattern could be gotten off from the under one! I mean to try it, little by little.
I have found out another funny thing, but I shan’t tell it this time! It does not do to trust people too much.
There are only two more days to get this paper off, and I believe John is beginning to notice. I don’t like the look in his eyes.
And I heard him ask Jennie a lot of professional questions about me. She had a very good report to give.
She said I slept a good deal in the daytime.
John knows I don’t sleep very well at night, for all I’m so quiet!
He asked me all sorts of questions, too, and pretended to be very loving and kind.
As if I couldn’t see through him!
Still, I don’t wonder he acts so, sleeping under this paper for three months.
It only interests me, but I feel sure John and Jennie are secretly affected by it.
Hurrah! This is the last day, but it is enough. John is to stay in town over night, and won’t be out until this evening.
Jennie wanted to sleep with me—the sly thing! but I told her I should undoubtedly rest better for a night all alone.
That was clever, for really I wasn’t alone a bit! As soon as it was moonlight, and that poor thing began to crawl and shake the pattern, I got up and ran to help her.
I pulled and she shook, I shook and she pulled, and before morning we had peeled off yards of that paper.
A strip about as high as my head and half around the room.
And then when the sun came and that awful pattern began to laugh at me I declared I would finish it to-day!
We go away to-morrow, and they are moving all my furniture down again to leave things as they were before.
Jennie looked at the wall in amazement, but I told her merrily that I did it out of pure spite at the vicious thing.
She laughed and said she wouldn’t mind doing it herself, but I must not get tired.
How she betrayed herself that time!
But I am here, and no person touches this paper but me—not alive!
She tried to get me out of the room—it was too patent! But I said it was so quiet and empty and clean now that I believed I would lie down again and sleep all I could; and not to wake me even for dinner—I would call when I woke.
So now she is gone, and the servants are gone, and the things are gone, and there is nothing left but that great bedstead nailed down, with the canvas mattress we found on it.
We shall sleep downstairs to-night, and take the boat home to-morrow.
I quite enjoy the room, now it is bare again.
How those children did tear about here!
This bedstead is fairly gnawed!
But I must get to work.
I have locked the door and thrown the key down into the front path.
I don’t want to go out, and I don’t want to have anybody come in, till John comes.
I want to astonish him.
I’ve got a rope up here that even Jennie did not find. If that woman does get out, and tries to get away, I can tie her!
But I forgot I could not reach far without anything to stand on!
This bed will not move!
I tried to lift and push it until I was lame, and then I got so angry I bit off a little piece at one corner—but it hurt my teeth.
Then I peeled off all the paper I could reach standing on the floor. It sticks horribly and the pattern just enjoys it! All those strangled heads and bulbous eyes and waddling fungus growths just shriek with derision!
I am getting angry enough to do something desperate. To jump out of the window would be admirable exercise, but the bars are too strong even to try.
Besides I wouldn’t do it. Of course not. I know well enough that a step like that is improper and might be misconstrued.
I don’t like to look out of the windows even—there are so many of those creeping women, and they creep so fast.
I wonder if they all come out of that wallpaper as I did?
But I am securely fastened now by my well-hidden rope—you don’t get me out in the road there!
I suppose I shall have to get back behind the pattern when it comes night, and that is hard!
It is so pleasant to be out in this great room and creep around as I please!
I don’t want to go outside. I won’t, even if Jennie asks me to.
For outside you have to creep on the ground, and everything is green instead of yellow.
But here I can creep smoothly on the floor, and my shoulder just fits in that long smooch around the wall, so I cannot lose my way.
Why, there’s John at the door!
It is no use, young man, you can’t open it!
How he does call and pound!
Now he’s crying for an axe.
It would be a shame to break down that beautiful door!
“John dear!” said I in the gentlest voice, “the key is down by the front steps, under a plantain leaf!”
That silenced him for a few moments.
Then he said—very quietly indeed, “Open the door, my darling!”
“I can’t,” said I. “The key is down by the front door under a plantain leaf!”
And then I said it again, several times, very gently and slowly, and said it so often that he had to go and see, and he got it, of course, and came in. He stopped short by the door.
“What is the matter?” he cried. “For God’s sake, what are you doing!”
I kept on creeping just the same, but I looked at him over my shoulder.
“I’ve got out at last,” said I, “in spite of you and Jane! And I’ve pulled off most of the paper, so you can’t put me back!”
Now why should that man have fainted? But he did, and right across my path by the wall, so that I had to creep over him every time!
Translation - Korean 다른 사람들과 다를 바 없는 내 남편 존이 여름 동안 고풍적인 집을 빌린다는 것은 굉장히 이례적인 일이다.
콜로니아 양식의 저택에 대대로 물러져 내려온 집 같죠. 이 집은 마치 흉가와 같기도 해서 낭만적인 곳으론 보이진 않지만 그건 지나친 욕심이겠죠.
이 집에는 이상한 구석이 있다고 확신해요.
그렇지 않으면 왜 이렇게 싼값에 빌려주겠어요? 그리고 왜 이렇게 오랫동안 비워뒀을까요?
그이는 물론 이런 저를 보고 코웃음 쳤지만 남편이란 으레 그런거겠죠.
그이는 굉장히 현실적인 사람이에요. 내 남편은 신앙을 믿지 않으며 미신에 대한 공포 따윈 없죠. 그리고 느껴지거나 보이지도 증명되지 않은 것들에 대한 이야기에는 스스럼없이 반박하죠.
그이는 의사예요. 그리고 어쩌면 -(살아있는 생명에는 이런 말을 잘 안 하지만 생명이 없는 종이에 써내려간다는 건 나에게 큰 위안이 되네요)- 어쩌면 그렇기 때문에 내 건강이 빨리 회복이 안 되는 거 같네요.
보다시피, 그이는 내가 아프다는 걸 믿지 않죠.
그러면 난들 어떻게 하겠어요?
망명 높은 의사이자 내 남편이 친구들과 친인척들에게 내가 건강상에는 문제가 없으며, 일시적인 신경성 우울증 -약간의 히스테리성 경향- 이라고 하는데 내가 어쩌겠어요?
내 오빠도 망명있는 의사인데 그이와 똑같이 말하네요.
그래서 나는 인산염이나 아인산염을 -무엇이든 간에- 복용해야 하고 강장제를 마시라고 하네요. 그리고 여행을 가고 바깥 공기를 쐬며 운동을 해야 한다고 하죠. 당연히 내가 건강을 되찾을 때까지 "일"하는 것은 절대적으로 금물이래요.
개인적으론 그런 의견엔 동의하지 않아요.
난 재미와 변화를 줄 수 있고 마음에 맞는 일을 하는 게 더 좋다고 생각하죠.
하지만 난들 어쩌겠어요?
그들의 반대에도 불구하고 잠시나마 글을 썼어요. 그렇지만 숨어서 써야 해서 여간 피곤한 일이 아니었죠. 아니면 큰 반대에 부딪히고 말죠.
난 가끔 이런 생각을 해봐요. 내가 하는 것에 대해 덜 반대하고 사람들과 어울리는 게 허락되며 재미는 일이 있었으면 하는 생각이요.-그렇지만 그이는 내가 내 건강을 생각하는 게 가장 안 좋다고 난리에요. 그리고 나도 내 증세를 생각하면 기분이 나빠진다고 고백하죠.
이제 다른 건 제쳐두고 이 집에 대해 이야기할까 봐요.
정말 아름다운 곳이에요! 이 집은 도로에서 좀 떨어져 있어요. 읍내에서는 5km정도 떨어져 있고요. 이 집은 내가 책에서 읽었던 영국집을 회상케 해요. 거기에는 생울타리와 벽 그리고 빗장이 잠긴 대문이 있어요. 그리고 사람들과 정원사들을 위해 마련된 조그마한 집들이 널린 곳이죠.
여기에 근사한 정원도 있네요! 이렇게 크고 응달진 정원은 본 적이 없어요. 도장나무로 가득한 오솔길과 포도나무로 덮인 정자 그리고 그 밑의 의자들도 보이네요.
온실 정원도 있었지만, 지금은 죄다 깨져있네요.
내 생각건데 이 집에서 법적 분쟁이 있었나 봐요. 상속자랑 공동상속자 사이에서요. 어쨌든 이 집은 몇 년간 비어있었어요.
이런 문제가 내 유령 취미를 좀 손상시키지만 괜찮아요. -이 집에는 이상한 점이 있어요- 난 느낄 수 있죠.
달빛이 가득한 밤 그이에게 이 집에 대한 내 생각을 말했어요. 하지만 그런 생각은 창문에서 들어오는 외풍 때문이라면서 창문을 닫았죠.
난 때론 그이에게 이유 없이 화가 날 때가 있어요. 예전에는 이처럼 예민한 적이 없었지만요. 아마 내 신경증세 때문인가 봐요.
그러나 그이는 내가 그렇게 느끼는 이유는 적절한 자제력을 취하지 않았기 때문이라고 하네요. 그래서 나 자신을 통제하는데 안간힘을 써야 해요 -적어도 그이 앞에서요- 그리고 이런 노력은 날 굉장히 피곤하게 만들죠.
나는 우리 방을 조금도 좋아하지 않아요. 베란다가 통하는 밑층 방을 원했었죠. 그곳은 창문 곳곳에 장미들이 있고 예쁜 빈티지 친츠무늬 커튼도 쳐져 있거든요. 그렇지만 그이는 고려를 안 했겠죠.
그이는 그 방에는 창문이 하나밖에 없고 침대 두 개를 놔둘 공간도 없다고 말했어요. 그리고 남편이 가까운 방을 쓸려고 해도 다른 방이 없다고도 했죠.
그이는 매우 신경 써줍니다. 날 사랑해주고 특별한 지시 없이는 날 움직이지 않게 하죠.
하루 매 시간마다 먹어야하는 약이 있어요. 그이가 날 대신해서 하나부터 열까지 다 신경써주지요. 이런 그이에게 감사하지 않으면 배은망덕이겠죠.
남편은 전적으로 날 위해서 이 집을 빌렸다고 말했죠. 내가 좋은 공기를 마시고 편안하게 휴식을 취해야 한다면서요. 그러면서 “여보, 당신의 운동량은 당신의 기력에 달렸어요. 그리고 식사량은 당신의 입맛에 달렸고요. 그래도 공기는 당신이 언제든지 마실 수 있어요”라고 말하네요. 그래서 우리는 이 집의 꼭대기 층에 있는 방을 육아실로 쓰게 되었어요.
그 방은 공간이 넓고 바람이 잘 드는 곳이에요. 창문이 사방에 있고 바람과 햇빛이 잘 들죠. 이 방을 살펴보면 처음에는 육아실이였다가 놀이방, 그다음엔 운동실이었을 듯하네요. 모든 창문들에 어린아이들을 위해 창살이 쳐져 있고 벽에는 고리 같은 게 달려있네요.
페인트랑 벽지 꼴을 보니 남자아이들이 이 방을 쓴거 같네요. 침대 머리 맡과 내가 손 뻗어서 닿을 수 있는 곳들에 있는 벽지에 커다란 구멍들이 군데군데 뜯겨있어요. 그리고 방의 다른 쪽 밑부분도 많이 찢겨있죠. 이렇게 흉측한 벽지를 볼 줄은 몰랐네요.
모든 예술적 죄악을 저지른 듯한 거대하고 화려한 패턴 중 하나를 가지고 있죠.
그 무늬는 눈으로 따라가기 어려울 만큼 흐릿하고 성가시지만 계속 흥미를 자극할 정도로 눈에 띄네요. 그 진부한 무늬와 불명확한 곡선을 조금 거리를 두고 보면 갑자기 스스로 목숨을 끊는 것처럼 보이죠. - 터무니없는 각도에서 떨어지고 듣도보지 못한 식으로 자멸합니다.
이 벽지는 혐오스럽고 거부감이 드는 색을 띠고 있어요. 그을리고 선명하지 않은 누런색이죠. 이상스레 천천히 들어오는 햇빛에 조금씩 색이 바래져있네요.
희미하지만 몇몇 군데는 불에 타는 듯한 주황색을 띠고 다른 곳에는 역겨운 유황빛이 도네요.
아이들이 벽지를 싫어했던 것이 분명하네요. 나라도 이 방을 오래 써야 한다면 싫어하겠어요.
저기 그이가 오고 있네요. 글 쓴 종이를 숨겨야겠어요. 내가 글 쓰는걸 보면 그이는 싫어하니까요.
우리가 이 집에 온지 이 주가 되었네요. 이사온 첫날이래로 글쓰고 싶은 생각이 안 들어요.
난 지금 창문 옆에 앉아있어요. 이 끔찍한 방 안에서 말이에요. 내 힘이 딸려서 그렇지 이 방에서 내가 글 쓰는걸 막을 수 있는 건 아무것도 없죠.
그이는 하루종일 읍내에 있네요. 환자 증세가 심각하면 밤에도 읍내에 나가 있죠.
난 중증이 아니라서 다행이네요.
그렇지만 이 신경증 때문에 난 지독하게 우울해요.
그이는 내가 얼마나 고통받고 있는지 알지 못할 거에요. 그인 내가 고통을 겪을 이유가 없다는 거에요. 그인 그렇게 생각하면서 만족해합니다.
물론 내가 가지고 있는 문제는 단순히 신경증일 뿐이죠. 이 신경증으로 난 어찌 되었든 간에 할 일들을 못하겠어요!
난 그이에게 난 도움이 되고 싶었고 편안한 안식이 되고 싶었지만, 지금의 날 보세요. 이미 짐짝이나 다름없습니다!
아무도 믿지를 않죠. 나에게 있어서 옷을 입고 식구를 만나고 물건을 주문하는 것 같은 사소한 것들이 얼마나 많은 노력이 필요한지를요.
메리가 내 아기를 그토록 잘 봐준다는 게 다행이네요. 정말로 사랑스러운 아기죠!
그렇지만 난 그 아이와 같이 있을 수는 없어요. 같이 있으면 신경이 과민해지기 때문이거든요.
난 그이가 한 번도 신경과민을 겪어본 적이 없다고 생각합니다. 그이는 벽지에 대해서 말하는 날보곤 코웃음을 치네요.
처음에는 그이가 이 방을 새로 도배하려고 했어요. 그렇지만 결국에는 내가 그 방에 대해 너무 많이 생각한다고 말했죠. 그러면서 신경증 환자에게 그런 공상을 가지고 있는 게 그 무엇보다 안 좋다고 덧붙이더라고요.
그리고 벽지를 새로 도배하고 나서는 내가 이 무거운 침대 문제다. 그다음은 창살이 쳐져 있는 창문 또 다음은 층계 꼭대기의 문을 탓할 것이라고 말하더군요.
그이는 “당신도 알겠지만, 이 집은 당신을 위한 곳이에요. 여보 삼 개월 동안만 집을 빌리는데 수리하는 건 조금 그렇네요.”라고 나에게 이야기하네요.
“그러면 우리 밑의 층으로 내려가요. 거기에 예쁜 방이 있잖아요”라고 난 대꾸했죠.
그리고 나선 그이가 날 안더라고요. 우리 귀여운 자기라고 말하면서요. 내가 원하면 지하실로 내려갈 거고 게다가 흰색으로 도배를 할 거라고 하더군요.
그렇지만 침대랑 창문에 대해서 그이가 말한 게 맞는 것 같아요.
이 방은 누가 보아도 바람이 잘 들고 편안하다고 느낍니다. 당연히 난 단순한 변덕으로 그이를 불편하게 만들 만큼 어리석은 바보는 아니죠.
점점 이 큰 방이 맘에 들기 시작하네요. 이 끔찍한 벽지만은 빼고요.
창문 밖으로는 정원이 보이네요. 신비롭고 짙은 그늘이 드리운 정자와 화려한 종래의 꽃들 그리고 덩굴들과 굽어진 나무들을 볼 수 있죠.
다른 창문에서는 이 저택에 속한 아름다운 항만의 정경과 부두도 보이네요. 아름답고 응달진 오솔길도 있습니다. 집에서부터 부두까지 쭉 이어져 있죠. 난 언제나 사람들이 수많은 오솔길과 정자를 걸어가는 모습을 상상해요. 그렇지만 그이는 내가 그런 몽상에 빠지면 안된다며 조심하라고 이르죠. 그러곤 내가 가진 상상력과 이야기를 만드는 습성은 나와 같은 신경쇠약 환자에게 온갖 재밌는 상상으로 이끈다고 말하네요. 그리고 이런 습성을 주시하기 위해서는 내 의지와 옳은 분별력을 발동해야 한다고 했어요. 그래서 난 그렇게 하고자 노력하죠.
내 몸이 좀 나아서 글을 쓴다면 억눌러진 생각들에서 벗어나 쉴 수 있을거에요.
그렇지만 글을 쓰고자 하면 피로해지네요.
내가 하는 일에 대해 사람들과 같이하거나 어떤 조언을 받을 수 없다는 건 참 실망스러운 일이죠. 내 몸이 진짜로 괜찮아지면 사촌 헨리와 줄리아를 집에 초대해서 오랫동안 머물게 하리라고 그이가 말했어요. 하지만 그이는 그런 자극적인 사람들을 부르느니 내 배개에 폭죽을 넣는 게 더 낫겠대요.
내 몸이 빨리 나아지면 좋겠네요.
그러나 내 몸에 대해서 생각하지 않아야겠죠. 이 벽지는 음흉한 영향을 끼치는 것을 스스로 아는 듯 해요.
벽지의 한 곳에서는 부러진 모가지와 두 개의 툭 튀어나온 눈알이 뒤집어져서 나를 쳐 보이는 듯 보여요.
난 그런 무늬가 사라지지 않고 계속 보이는 것이 굉장히 불쾌하네요. 그 무늬는 사방으로 기어다니고 있어 기분 나쁘고 깜빡거리지 않는 눈알이 어디에서나 보이죠. 그 벽지 사이에 서로 딱 맞지 않는 두 폭이 있네요. 눈알이 폭 따라 위아래로 이리저리 움직여요. 한 눈알은 다른 눈알들에 비해 높게 있기도 하네요.
난 무생물에게도 이렇게 많은 표정이 있다는 걸 처음 봤죠. 이제는 그 무늬가 얼마나 많은 표정을 지을 수 있지 익히 알게 되었네요. 난 어릴 적 눈 뜬 채로 누워있으면 아무것도 없는 벽과 가구에서 굉장한 즐거움과 무서움을 느끼곤 했죠. 아이들이 장난감 가게에서 느끼는 것 이상으로 말입니다.
우리의 크고 낡은 장롱 손잡이가 얼마나 다정하게 눈짓을 보내곤 했는지 기억해요. 힘 쌘 친구처럼 보이는 의자도 있었죠.
어떤 물건이라도 맹렬히 화나 있어 보이면 난 언제나 그랬듯이 의자에 뛰어올랐어요. 그러면 그 의자를 나를 지켜준다고 느꼈죠.
이 방에 있는 가구들은 조화로워 보이진 않아요. 모두 다 아래층에서 가져왔기 때문에 그렇겠지요. 이 방이 놀이방으로 사용되었을 때 사람들은 육아실에 필요한 것들을 다 빼냈을 거 같아요. 분명히요. 이 방같이 아이들이 험하게 쓴 방은 본 적이 없죠.
내가 전에 말했듯이 벽지는 여러 곳이 뜯어져 있는데 친형제들보다 가까이 붙어있는 곳들도 있네요. 그러니 아이들이 벽지를 싫어한 만큼 집요하게 뜯어낸 것 같아요.
방바닥은 긁혀져있고 갈라져있으면서 금이 가 있네요. 회반죽은 여기저기 패였고 이 방에 유일하게 있는 크고 육중한 침대는 마치 전쟁을 치른 것 같이 보이죠.
그러나 그런 건 신경도 안 쓰이죠. 벽지는 거슬리지만요.
시누이가 저기 와요. 시누인 정말로 착하고 날 끔찍이 생각해주죠. 글 쓴다는 걸 보이면 안되요.
시누인 완벽하고 열정적인 가정부죠. 그리고 그런 일에 굉장히 만족감을 느끼고 있네요. 확실히 시누인 내가 글쓰기을 쓰기 때문에 아프다고 생각하는 거 같아요.
그래도 시누이가 나가 있으면 난 글을 쓸 수 있어요. 창문 밖으로 시누이가 나가는 게 볼 수 있죠.
한 창문에서 아름답고 응달지면서 구불구불한 길이 보이네요. 다른 창문에서는 저 너머 시골 풍경을 볼 수 있네요. 큰 느릅나무들과 벨벳 같은 초원들로 가득한 아름다운 시골 전경이죠.
벽지는 다른 각도에서 보면 밑무늬 같은 게 보입니다. 굉장히 신경이 거슬리게 하는 무늬죠. 그 무늰 햇빛이 특정하게 비치면 보이지만 선명하진 않기 때문이에요.
벽지에서 퇴색되지 않았지만, 햇빛에 의해 바래진 곳에서는 기묘하고 자극적이면서 형태가 없는 모습으로 보여요. 그 무늰 선명하면서 미숙해 보이는 겉무늬 뒤에 있다는 거에 기분 나빠 보이네요.
시누이가 계단에 와있죠!
독립기념일이 끝났어요! 사람들은 가고 난 굉장히 피곤하네요. 그이는 내가 사람들과 같이 있는 게 좋다고 생각했나봐요. 그래서 어머니와 넬리 그리고 아이들을 일주일 정도 이 집에 와있죠.
물론 나는 일을 하지 않았네요. 시누인 이제 모든 것을 돌보죠.
그런데도 난 맨날 피곤하네요.
그이 말이 내 건강이 빨리 좋아지지 않으면 가을에는 위어 미첼이라는 의사에 보낸다고 합니다.
그렇지만 난 전혀 가고 싶지 않죠. 내 친구 중 그 의사에게서 진찰을 받은 사람이 있어요. 그 친구의 말이 그 의사가 내 남편이랑 내 오빠랑 다를 바 없다는 거에요. 심하면 더 심했지!
게다가, 그곳까지 가는 건 너무나도 먼 여정이에요.
어떤 것이든 간에 내 손이 가는 건 무가치하다고 느껴지네요. 점차 끔찍하게 초조하고 투덜거려지네요.
아무것도 아닌 거에 울고 대부분의 시간을 울면서 보내죠.
물론 그이든지 아니면 누군가와 있으면 괜찮아지네요. 그렇지만 나 홀로 있으면 늘 웁니다.
그리고 요즘 혼자 자주 있네요. 그이는 중증환자 때문에 읍내에 자주 나갑니다. 시누인 착해서 내가 원하면 날 혼자 있게 해주죠.
그래서 정원을 조금 걷거나 아름다운 오솔길을 따라 걸어요. 장미나무 밑에 있는 현관에 앉거나 이 방에 누워서 많은 시간을 보냅니다.
벽지는 아니지만, 이 방이 점차 좋아지고 있어요. 아마도 벽지 때문일지도 몰라요.
점점 맘에 들기도 합니다!
이 움직이지 않는 침대에 누워서 -못으로 박혀있을 거에요.- 계속 벽지의 무늬를 눈으로 따라가며 보고 있네요. 이게 운동만큼 좋은 거라고 난 믿어요. 벽지의 바닥 부분에서 시작하죠. 어느 것도 손대어지지 않은 저 구석 밑부분에서 말이에요. 그러곤 결심을 하죠.
그 무의미한 패턴을 추적해서 어떤 결론을 내겠다고요.
난 벽지 무늬를 만드는 법칙에 대해 조금 알죠. 그리고 이 무늬들은 어떠한 법칙에도 맞지 않아요. 방사법칙, 교차법, 반복법, 대칭법 그리고 들어본 적 있는 어떠한 법칙에도요.
물론 폭에 따라 반복적인 패턴이 보이지만 그거 말고는 다른 특징은 보이지 않네요.
한쪽에서 보면 각 폭들이 홀로 서 있어요. 부풀어진 곡선들과 무늬의 화려함이 -발작과 혼란을 일으키는 저질의 로마네스크 양식같은- 무의미하게 따로따로 아래로 어기적 어기적거리며 오르락내리락합니다.
그렇지만 다른 쪽에서 보면 대각선으로 연결이 되어있네요. 불규칙하게 쭉쭉 뻗은 선들은 징그럽게 요동치는 거대한 파도처럼 움직입니다. 마치 파도에 휘몰려 버덩거리는 해초 떼처럼요.
전체적인 무늬가 수평으로 뻗어 나가네요. 나에겐 그렇게 보이죠. 그 방향으로 나아가는 무늬에 대해 알아내다가 지쳐버렸어요.
집주인은 띠 모양 장식을 위해 무늬 폭을 뉘어 붙였네요. 혼란만 더 가중할 뿐이죠.
방 끝쪽에는 벽지가 거의 훼손이 안 된 부분이 있는데, 엇갈리게 겹친 광선이 희미해지고 다시 햇빛이 나지막히 그곳을 바로 비치면 방사선형의 무늬가 보입니다. -중점을 중심으로 괴상한 형상이 만들어지고 난 후 사방팔방으로 확확 뻗어 나갑니다.
그 문양을 눈으로 따라가면 피곤해지죠. 낮잠이 필요한 듯하네요.
내가 왜 이런걸 써야 하는지 잘 모르겠네요.
원하지 않죠.
할 수 있다고도 느끼지 않고요.
그리고 그이는 내가 글 쓰는 건 말도 안되는 일이라고 생각하겠죠. 그러나 나는 어떤 식으로든 내가 느끼고 생각하는 것을 말해야겠죠. -큰 도움이 될 거에요!
그러나 그렇게 하려면 큰 노력이 필요하겠죠.
하루 반나절동안 난 몹시 뭘 하는 것이 귀찮아지네요. 그래서 누워있기만 하네요.
그이는 내가 기력을 잃으면 안된다고 합니다. 대구간유와 강장제 같은 것을 먹으라고 하네요. 에일맥주나 와인 그리고 덜익은 고기는 피하고요.
내 남편 존! 그이는 날 너무나도 사랑하고 내가 아픈 걸 싫어합니다. 저번에 그이와 터놓고 이야기하려고 노력했어요. 그리고 날 내려주었으면 하고 사촌 헨리와 줄리아를 만나고 싶다고 그이에게 말했죠.
그렇지만 그이는 내가 가는 걸 반대했었고 내가 사촌집에 가도 제대로 설 기력도 없을 거라고 이야기했어요. 난 그이를 설득하지 못했죠. 왜냐하면 내가 말을 끝 맺히기도 전에 울어버렸거든요.
내가 제대로 생각하려면 많은 노력이 필요하네요. 아마도 이 신경쇠약증 때문이겠죠.
그이는 날 안으며 위층으로 데려다줬어요. 그리곤 날 침대에 눕히고 옆에 앉아서 내가 피곤해질 때까지 책을 읽어주었죠.
그이는 내가 그의 사랑스러운 아내라면서 그를 위해서라도 건강을 챙기고 기력을 회복해달라고 하네요.
그이는 그 누구도 아닌 나 자신만을 날 챙길 수 있다면서 내가 굳은 의지 갖고 자제력을 사용하라고 합니다. 그리고 터무니없는 망상에 사로잡히지 말라고 하죠.
그래도 한가지 안심이 되는 부분이 있어요. 아이가 건강하고 행복하다는 겁니다. 그 아인 이 흉측한 벽지가 있는 육아실에 안 있을 필요가 없죠.
우리가 이 방을 사용하지 않았으면 그 사랑스러운 아이가 사용했을 거에요! 얼마나 다행인 줄 모르겠네요! 그 순진하고 작은 것을 이런 방에 지내게 한다면 난 아이를 가지지 않았을 거에요.
여태까지 그렇게 생각해보진 않았지만, 그이가 날 이 방에 지내게 한 건 어찌 보면 다행이었네요. 아이들보다는 내가 이 방을 더 잘 견딜 수 있으니까요.
당연히 사람들에게 말을 하지 않았지만 -난 꽤 현명합니다.- 계속해서 벽지를 지켜보고 있어요.
이 벽지에는 날 빼고 그 누구도 알아차리지 못할 것이 있죠.
겉무늬 뒤에 있는 희미한 형상이 날이 갈수록 점점 선명해지고 있다는 거에요.
그 형상은 언제나 같은 모양이지만 굉장히 많이 있어요.
마치 등을 구부린 여자가 겉무늬 뒤를 기는 듯이 보이죠. 난 그 형상이 별로 좋지는 않네요. 그이가 날 그 형상으로부터 떨어지게 해주었으면 하는 바람이 있어요.
그이와 내 건강 상태에 대해 이야기하는 게 어렵네요. 그이가 똑똑하고 날 너무나도 사랑해주기 때문이겠죠.
그렇지만 지난밤에 한 번 이야기는 해봤어요.
달빛이 드는 밤이었다. 낮에 해가 비추듯이 달빛도 모든 곳을 환하게 밝혀주는 밤이었어요.
난 가끔 벽지에 있는 그 형상을 보는 게 싫습니다. 그 형상은 아주 천천히 기척 없이 기어다니면서 한 창문이나 다른 창문을 통해서 방에 들어오죠.
그이는 잠들어 있었고 난 남편을 깨우기 싫었어요. 그래서 굽이치는 벽지에 드리운 달빛을 계속 응시했어요. 내가 소름이 끼치는 느낌이 들 때까지요.
겉무늬 뒤에 있는 그 희미한 형상이 무늬를 흔드는 것처럼 보였죠. 마치 그 여자가 벽지에서 나가고 싶어 하는 듯이요.
난 조심스럽게 일어나서 그 벽지가 진짜로 움직이는지 보러 다가갔어요. 내가 침대로 돌아왔을 때 그이는 깨어있었죠.
“여보, 무슨 일 있어요?” 그이가 말하네요. “그렇게 돌아다니지 말아요. 당신 그러다 감기 걸릴 수도 있어요.”
난 그때다 싶어 그이에게 말했죠. 난 이 방에 머물면서 건강이 나아지지 않는다고요. 그리고 이 방에서 날 데리고 나가달라고요.
“왜 그래요. 여보” 그이가 대꾸했죠. “우리 삼 주일만 지나면 임대 기간이 끝나요. 그 전에 떠날 수야 없지 않소.”
"아직 집수리도 끝나지 않았고 난 이곳을 지금 당장 떠날 수도 없는 입장이에요. 물론 당신이 위험에 처하면 떠날 수는 있지만, 당신은 점점 좋아지고 있어요. 여보, 당신이 느낄지는 모르겠지만요. 난 의사요. 여보, 당신 몸무게도 늘었고 혈색도 좋아지고 있어요. 그리고 입맛도 돌아오고 있고요. 난 당신에 대해 훨씬 안심하고 있소.”
“난 몸무게가 조금도 늘지 않았어요” 난 대꾸했죠. “하나도요. 그리고 내 입맛은 저녁엔 괜찮아지긴 하지만 그건 당신이 나와 함께 있기 때문이에요. 당신이 없는 아침에는 입맛이 더 없어질 뿐이에요.”
“우리 불쌍한 자기!” 그는 날 크게 안으면서 말했죠. “자기 마음 가는 대로 생각해요! 그렇지만 지금은 잠자면서 쉬어요. 그리고 내일 아침에 이야기하자고요!”
"그러면 당신 아침에 집에 있을 거에요?” 난 우울하게 그이에게 물었죠.
"내가 어떻게 나갈 수 있겠어요. 여보, 삼 주만 더 있으면 돼요. 그러면 내 여동생이 집을 정리하는 동안 우린 여행을 떠날 수 있소. 정말이에요, 여보, 당신은 괜찮아지고 있는 거에요!”
“아마 신체적으로는 괜찮아질지 모르죠” -난 말하다가 금방 멈췄죠. 그이가 일어나서 날 엄하고도 나무라는 표정으로 쳐다보더라고요. 그래서 더이상 말을 이을 수가 없었죠.
“자기,” 그이가 말했어요. “당신과 날 그리고 우리 아이를 위해서 당신에게 부탁하겠소. 그런 생각인들 하지 말아줄 수 있나요! 당신 같은 사람에게 그런 생각만큼 위험하고 유혹적인 것은 없소. 말도 안되고 바보같은 망상이에요. 내가 말하는 것을 믿어줄 수 있겠소? 의사로서요.”
그래서 난 더이상 말을 하지 않겠다고 이야기했죠. 밤이 더 지나기 전에 우린 잠자리에 들었어요. 그이는 처음엔 내가 잠에 들었다고 생각했을 거에요. 하지만 난 그렇지 않았죠. 난 몇 시간 동안 침대에 누워서 겉무늬와 속무늬가 같이 움직이는지 따로 움직이는지를 알아내려고 애쓰고 있었어요.
그런 무늬를 대낮에 보면 연속성이라든지 어떤 법칙이란 게 없습니다. 그저 평범한 사람들에게 계속 신경을 거슬리게 하죠.
무늬색이 흉측해서 정이 안 가고 기분이 나쁘게 만들면서도 사람을 괴롭히네요.
그 무늬를 알아냈다는 생각이 들어서 알아낸 대로 무늬를 따라가다 보면 확 공중재기돌기를 하면서 무늰 다시 제자리로 되돌아오죠. 마치 뺨을 치고 때려눕혀서 사람을 짓밟아버리는 것 같네요. 악몽같죠.
겉무늬는 곰팡이를 연상케 하는 화려한 아라베스크 무늬네요. 마디가 나 있는 독버섯을 상상해봐요. 그 겉무늰 그 독버섯이 끝없이 일렬로 이어지면서 싹을 틔우고 포자를 뿜어대면서 발아하는 것처럼 보이죠.
가끔씩 그렇게 보입니다!
이 벽지에는 눈에 띄는 특징이 있네요. 나 빼고는 어떠한 이도 알지 못할 거에요. 그리고 빛이 바뀜에 따라 그 무늬도 바뀌죠.
해가 동녘 창으로 내려비치면 난 무늬를 쭉 봅니다. -그 무늬가 굉장히 빨리 변한다는 게 믿기지 않거든요.
그래서 난 항상 쳐다보고 있죠.
달빛이 방 안으로 들어오면 -달이 뜨면 달이 밤 내내 방을 밝히죠.- 난 같은 벽지였나 싶네요.
밤에 어떠한 종류의 빛이든 황혼이라든지 촛불 그리고 램프불 혹은 최악의 빛인 달빛이 드리우면 무늬는 쇠창살로 바뀌죠. 겉무늬가 그렇게 된다는 말이지요. 그리고 그 무늬 뒤에 있는 여자는 눈에 더 띄게 돼요.
난 오랫동안 그 무늬 뒤에 있는 게 무엇인지 몰랐어요. - 희미한 속무늬요- 그렇지만 이제는 알겠습니다. 여자예요.
낮에는 그 여자가 얌전하고 조용히 있어요. 난 그 무늬가 그녀를 조용하게 만드는 거 같아요. 정말 풀리지 않는 수수께끼 같네요. 그것을 보고 있노라면 한참 동안 조용해지네요.
난 요즘 자주 누워있어요. 그이는 그렇게 하고 원하는 만큼 잠을 청하는 게 나에게 좋다고 하죠.
그리고 그이는 내가 밥 먹고 나서 한 시간 정도 잠을 청하게 하고 있어요.
그건 정말 안 좋은 습관이지요. 왜냐하면, 잠이 들지 않거든요.
그리고 계속 속임수만 늘어나고 있네요. 식구들에겐 내가 깨어있다는 걸 말하고 있지 않거든요.
사실은 그이가 점점 무서워지고 있어요.
그이는 때때로 굉장히 이상하게 보이고 시누인 말로 설명할 수 없는 표정을 짓기도 하네요.
가끔 이런 생각을 하기도 합니다. 과학적인 가설처럼요. 아마 그들은 벽지 때문에 그럴 수 있다는 것을요.
난 그이가 눈치 못 채게 그이를 슬쩍 쳐다보다가 의심받지 않을 변명을 대면서 갑자기 방으로 들어갈 때가 있어요. 그럴 때 그이가 벽지를 보고 있는 것을 몇 번 보곤 했어요. 그리고 시누이도 그이와 똑같아요. 난 시누이가 한 번은 손으로 벽지를 만지는걸 봤어요.
그 때 시누인 내가 방에 있는걸 몰랐어요. 그리곤 난 최대한 자제한 태도와 조용한 목소리로 지금 벽지에서 머하고 있냐고 시누이에게 물었죠. 시누인 마치 도둑질을 하다 걸린 듯마냥 돌아보아 보더군요. 그리곤 왜 자기를 놀래냐면서 꽤 화를 냈어요.
그리고 나선 시누이는 이 벽지에 닿는 모든 것들이 물든다고 했어요. 내 옷과 그이 옷에 누런색 자국이 있는걸 발견하기도 했고요. 그리고 시누인 우리가 더 조심했어야했다고도 말했죠!
그 말이 순수하게 들리나요? 난 시누이가 무늬에 자세히 들여다보았던 걸 알죠. 그리고 난 나 말고는 그 누구도 무늬의 비밀에 대해 알지 못하도록 하기로 결심했어요.
생활이 이전보다 더 재밌어졌네요. 나에게 더욱 기대에 차서 고대하며 주시할 것이 생겼거든요. 난 정말로 더 잘 먹고 예전보다 더 조용해졌어요.
그이는 내가 더 좋아졌다고 많이 좋아하네요. 그이가 저번에 웃으면서 이야기했어요. 내가 벽지에 대한 망상을 가지고 있지만, 건강이 좋아보인다고요.
난 웃으면서 넘겼죠. 그이에겐 이유를 말할 생각이 없어요. 벽지 때문에 내가 더 좋아졌다는 걸요. 그렇게 말하면 그이가 날 놀릴 거거든요. 심지어는 날 그 벽지에서 떼어놓을 거에요.
난 그 무늬의 비밀을 알아낼 때까지는 떠나고 싶지 않네요. 일주일 정도의 시간이 남았는데 그 정도면 충분하죠.
난 기분이 훨씬 좋아졌어요. 밤에는 잠을 많이 자지 않아요. 무늬가 변하는걸 보는 게 너무 흥미롭거든요. 그래도 낮에는 낮잠을 많이 잡니다.
낮에는 그 무늬가 지루하고 당황스러워요.
그 벽지에는 전체적으로 항상 새롭게 곰팡이들이 피어나있고 그 위에는 노란색이 덮여있죠. 세심하게 보려고 하지만 다 세워볼 수는 없네요.
그 색깔은 세상 이상한 노란색이에요. 그 벽지 말이에요. 내가 여태까지 본 노란색이란 색은 다 떠오르게 하죠. 마리니아제비와 같이 이쁜 색이 아니에요. 마치 오래되어서 낡고 기분 나쁜 노란색이 떠오르네요.
그런 거 말고도 다른 게 있어요. 바로 벽지에서 나는 냄새요. 우리가 방에 들어왔을 때 그 냄새를 맡을 수 있었죠. 그렇지만 바람과 햇빛이 많이 들면 나름 괜찮아요. 이제 일주일 내내 안개가 끼고 비 내리고 있어서 문을 열든 닫든 간에 냄새는 방에 그대로 있네요.
그 냄새는 집 전체에 배어있어요.
식당에 머물러있다가 거실로 슬금슬금 기어오죠. 그리곤 복도에 숨고 계단에 누워서 날 기다리고 있죠.
내 머리에도 냄새가 배였어요.
심지어 내가 마차를 타러 갈 때도 놀라게 하려고 내가 머리를 훡 뒤로 돌면 그 냄새가 있죠.
정말로 독특한 냄새에요. 몇 시간 동안 그게 먼가를 유심히 생각했어요. 도대체 무슨 냄새인가 하고요.
처음에는 나쁘지 않아요. 매우 은은하지만 꽤 미묘하면서 오랫동안 사라지지 않는 냄새에요.
이런 축축한 날에는 굉장히 고약하죠. 밤에 일어나면 그 냄새가 내 머리 위에서 머물고 있다는 걸 느낍니다.
처음에는 냄새가 날 괴롭혔죠. 난 냄새를 없애려고 집을 불태워버릴까도 생각했었어요.
그렇지만 지금은 익숙합니다. 그 냄새가 무엇인가를 생각했을 때 내가 떠오르는 건 그 벽지의 색깔이에요. 싯누런 색 냄새요.
이 벽 위엔 웃긴 자국이 있어요. 굽도리 주변에 저 밑에 있죠. 방을 두르고 있는 줄이 있네요. 그 줄은 모든 가구 뒤를 지납니다. 침대빼고요. 마치 여러번 문지른 거 같은 거 같은 길고 쭉 뻗은 자국이에요.
이 줄을 어떻게 만들었는지 그리고 누가 했고 왜 했는지 궁금하네요. 빙빙빙 돌아가며 -방안을 쭉 돌아가며- 있어서 날 어지럽게 하죠.
마침내 무언가를 발견했네요.
밤에 계속 보면서 무늬가 변할 때 난 마침내 알아냈죠.
겉무늬가 움직이는걸요. -의심할 여지가 없죠! 겉무늬 뒤에 있는 여자가 벽지를 흔드네요.
간혹 그 여자가 난 겉무늬 뒤에 많이 있다고 생각하죠. 어떨 땐 한 명이기도 하지만, 빨리 기어다니기 때문에 벽지 전체가 흔들리죠.
매우 밝은 곳에선 그 여자는 가만히 있고, 어두운 곳에서는 창살을 잡고 매우 흔들어댑니다.
그리곤 창살 사이로 기어나올려고 애쓰죠. 그러나 그 누구도 무늬에서 기어나올 수 없어요. -무늬가 목을 조르거든요. 그래서 많은 모가지들이 늘어져 있는거겠죠.
여자가 나가려고 하면 무늬는 목을 졸라버립니다. 그리곤 뒤집어버리죠. 그리고 눈의 흰자만 번뜩이게 되네요.
저 모가지들이 가려지거나 잘렸다면 그렇게 나쁘지 않았을 거에요.
난 저 여자들이 낮에는 밖으로 나온다고 생각해요.
그 이유를 당신에게 슬쩍 말해줄게요. -내가 봤어요!
이 방의 어떤 창문이라도 그 여자를 볼 수 있어요.
똑같은 여자라는 걸 알 수 있죠. 그년 항상 기어다니거든요. 그리고 대부분의 여자들은 낮에 기어다니지 않죠.
난 그 여잘 응달진 긴 오솔길에서 위아래로 기어다니는 걸 봐요. 그리고 어두운 포도나무 정자에서도 보이고 정원 주위를 맴돌고 있는 것도 볼 수 있죠.
나무 밑 긴 오솔길에서도 보입니다. 그리고 마차가 올 때는 그년 블랙베리 나무 밑으로 숨어버리죠.
난 그녈 나무랄 생각이 없어요. 대낮에 기어다니는걸 들키면 얼마나 부끄럽겠어요!
그 여자가 낮에 기어다니는 걸 보면 문을 언제나 잠가버립니다. 밤에는 그렇게 못하죠. 그이가 바로 이상하게 여길거라는 걸 알기 때문이죠.
그이가 요근래 하도 희한하게 굴어서 귀찮게 하고 싶지 않아요. 내가 그이와 따로 방을 썼으면 좋겠네요. 게다가 난 누구도 밤에 그녈 나오게 하게 하고 싶지 않아요. 날 빼고요.
난 한번에 모든 창문에서 그 여자를 볼 수 있는지 종종 생각하죠.
하지만 내가 빨리 몸을 돌렸을 때 그 여자가 한 번에 한 창문에서 나오는 것만 볼 수 있네요.
내가 줄곧 그 여잘 보고 있었지만 아마도 내가 몸을 돌리는 것보다 그 여잔 더 빨리 기어갈 수 있을 거에요.
난 이따금씩 저 탁 트인 시골길로 멀리 사라져가는 그 여잘 보기도 합니다. 바람이 세개 불 때 움직이는 구름의 그림자보다 더 빨리 움직이죠.
저 겉무늬를 속무늬에서 떼어낼 수만 있다면 오죽이나 좋겠어요. 꼭 그렇게 해보려고요.
난 벽지에서 또 다른 재미난 것을 발견했죠. 하지만 이번엔 말하기 않을 거에요! 너무 사람들을 믿는 것도 탈이니까요.
이제 이 벽지를 뜯을 수 있는 건 이틀 밖에 안 남았어요. 난 그이가 그걸 눈치채기 시작했다고 생각하죠. 난 그이가 날 쳐다보는 눈빛이 싫어요.
그리고 그이가 자기 여동생에게 나에 대한 의학적인 질문을 많이 하는 걸 들었죠. 시누인 아주 보고를 잘하더군요.
시누이는 내가 낮에는 낮잠을 많이 잔다고 했어요.
그인 내가 밤에 잠을 잘 자지 않는다는 걸 알고 있어요. 내가 굉장히 조용히 있거든요.
그이는 나에게도 정말 많은 질문을 했어요. 그리고 날 많이 사랑하고 신경 써주는 척을 하면서요.
난 내가 그이를 꽤뚫어보지 않는 척을 했죠.
그이가 석 달 동안 그 벽지 아래에서 잤으니 그럴 법도 하죠.
난 벽지를 유념하고 관찰하고 있지만, 그이와 시누이도 알게 모르게 영향을 받았다고 느껴요.
오늘이 마지막 날입니다. 하지만 시간은 충분하죠. 그이는 밤새 읍내에 머무를거고 오늘 저녁까지는 외출을 하지 않을 겁니다.
시누인 나랑 같이 자고 싶어했어요. -꽤 교활하네요! 그렇지만 밤에 혼자서 휴식을 취하면 더 잘 쉴 수 있을 것이라고 말했죠.
그 대답은 현명했었어요. 난 혼자가 아니었거든요. 달빛이 비치자마자 그 불쌍한 것이 기어다니기 시작하면서 벽지를 흔들었죠. 난 일어나서 그 여잘 도와주려고 다가갔어요.
난 창살을 밀었고 그년 흔들었어요. 내가 흔들면 그년 창살을 밀었죠. 아침이 밝기 전까지 우린 여러 폭의 벽지를 뜯어냈어요.
내 머리 높이까지의 벽지를 방 반가량 뜯었네요.
그리고나서 해가 떴을 때 그 괴상한 무늬가 날 보고 웃기 시작하자 난 오늘 내로 이걸 끝낼 거라 선언했죠.
우린 내일 떠나요. 사람들은 모든 가구를 아래층으로 내려다가 원래 위치대로 놓고 있어요.
시누이가 놀라 벽을 쳐다보아요. 난 명랑하게 말했어요. 그 사악한 것에 대한 앙갚음을 그렇게 한 거라고요.
시누인 웃으면서 자신이 뜯는 건 괜찮지만 난 피곤해지면 안 된다고 말했어요.
시누이의 속셈이 바로 다 드러난거죠!
그러나 난 여기 있어요. 그리고 나 말고는 어떤 사람도 이 벽지에 손댈 수 없어요.-그 누구도요!
시누인 날 방에서 나가게 하려고 하네요 -그 속셈이 눈에 뻔하죠! 그렇지만 난 지금 이 방이 조용하고 비어 있고 깨끗해서 다시 누워서 실컷 자겠다고 했어요. 그리고 저녁 시간 때도 날 깨우지 말라고도 했죠. -내가 일어나면 부르겠다고요.
시누이와 하인들도 나갔네요. 그리고 이 방에 있는 물건들도 다 없어졌어요. 지금 못으로 박힌 큰 침대와 침대에 있던 컨버스 매트리스 빼고는 이 방에는 아무것도 남아있지 않네요.
우린 아래층에서 오늘 밤에 자야합니다. 그리고 다음 날 배를 타고 집으로 갈 거에요.
이제는 이 방이 휑하니 비어서 좋네요.
그 아이들이 어찌나 벽지를 뜯었는지!
이 침대는 어지간히 긁혀있네요!
하지만 난 일을 끝내야 하죠.
난 방문을 잠가버리고 열쇠는 집 앞 오솔길에 던졌어요.
그이가 올 때까지 이 방을 나가고 싶지 않고 아무도 들이고 싶지 않아요.
그이를 놀라게 하고 싶죠.
시누이 모르게 밧줄을 들고 왔지요. 그 여자가 벽지에서 나오려고 하면 난 그녈 묶을 수 있게요.
하지만 발을 디디고 올라갈 수 있는 것이 없으면 멀리 뻗을 수 있다는 걸 잊고 있었죠!
이 침대는 움직이지 않겠죠.
있는 힘껏 침대를 밀고 올리려고 했지만 꿈쩍도 하지 않네요. 그래서 화가 나 침대의 한쪽을 물었는데 -내 이빨만 아프네요.
그다음엔 방바닥에 서서 내가 닿을 수 있는 벽지들은 모조리 뜯었어요. 무섭게도 내 손에 철썩철썩 붙었지만, 무늰 그걸 즐기는 듯 보이네요! 교살당한 모가지들과 튀어나온 눈들 그리고 비척거리며 새로 돋아난 곰팡이들은 비웃으면서 비명을 지고 있죠.
난 지금 너무 화가 나서 어떤 일이라도 할 것 같아요. 창밖으로 뛰어내리고 싶지만, 창살이 너무 단단해서 시도조차 힘들 듯하네요.
게다가 그런 짓은 안 하겠어요. 당연히 안 하죠. 그와 같은 행동은 적절하지 않고 오해받기 좋다는 것도 알고 있어요.
난 창밖을 바라보는 것조차 하고 싶지 않네요. 밖에는 많은 여자들이 기어다니고 있고 굉장히 빨리 움직이네요.
그들이 나처럼 벽지 밖으로 나왔는지 궁금하네요.
그러나 난 잘 숨기고 들고 온 밧줄로 나를 단단하게 묶었어요. -날 이 밧줄에서 빼내서 저 오솔길로 보낼 수 없을 거예요.
밤이 찾아오면 난 다시 저 벽지 무늬 뒤로 돌아갈거죠. 힘들겠지만요!
이 큰 방에 나와서 마음껏 기어다닐 수 있는 건 꽤 즐겁네요.
난 저 밖으로는 나가고 싶지는 않지만요. 시누이가 부탁해도 난 그렇게 안 할 거에요.
밖으로 나가게 되면 흙밭에서 기어야하고 또 모든 것이 노랗지 않고 푸르기 때문이죠.
그러나 이 방에선 힘들이지 않게 기어다닐 수 있고 내 어깨가 벽에 있는 긴 얼룩에 딱 들어맞네요. 그래서 길을 잃을 염려도 없죠.
그이가 문 앞에 있네요!
아무 소용이 없겠죠. 그이는 문을 열 수 없으니까요!
그이가 어찌나 날 부르고 문을 두드리던지!
이제는 도끼를 달라고 고함을 치네요.
저렇게 아름다운 문을 부순다는 건 부끄러운 일이죠!
“남편!” 난 다정한 목소리로 불렀죠. “열쇠는 계단 옆 질경이 잎 밑에 놔뒀어요”
잠시나마 그이가 침묵하네요.
그러곤 나지막하게 대답하더군요, “문을 열어줘요, 여보!”
“그렇게 할 순 없어요,” 난 대꾸했죠. “열쇠는 계단 옆 질경이 잎 밑에 뒀다고요!”
그리고 난 똑같은 말을 여러분 했어요. 나지막하고 천천히요. 그리고 나선 그이가 열쇠를 들고 방으로 들어왔어요. 그이는 문간에서 잠시 발걸음을 멈췄네요.
“도대체 무슨 일이 있는거에요?”라고 말하면서 흐느껴 울었죠. “세상에, 지금 당신 머하는거요!”
난 여전히 똑같이 기어다니면서 어깨너머로 그이를 흘겨봤어요.
“마침내 난 나왔어요,”난 말했죠. “당신과 당신 여동생이 막았지만요! 그리고 대부분의 벽지를 뜯었어요. 당신은 다시 날 벽지 뒤로 넣을 수 없어요!”
그런데 왜 저 남자는 기절한 걸까요? 어찌 됐든 간에 그이는 벽 옆의 내 길을 가로막고 누워있어서 그이를 매번 넘어가야겠네요!
