The ultimate purpose of the session is to outline the general structure of a successful freelancing career. It will help translators to set long-term goals and streamline the implementation process as well as warn them against typical errors in building their career as freelance translators.

Before a lengthy car trip, we do a lot of things: consult the weather forecast, fill in the window washer tank, and, primarily, plan the route choosing roads, taking note of places to avoid, booking hotels on the way... And it's merely a car trip. Delayed arrival is about the worst that can happen to us. It's but logical that, before starting as a freelancer, we should learn as much as possible about the road we'll be traveling along.

This session is intended for those who consider starting or have recently started their freelance careers. We'll discuss the typical stages of the career development focusing on general aims, goals and milestones characteristic for each stage as well as ways and methods of reaching these aims, goals and targets.

Before starting as a freelance translator

The video deals with freelancing and, specifically, freelance translation starting from the initial steps (assessing one's suitability for freelancing, taking first steps, etc.) essential for beginners to sophisticated topics like viability of outsourcing or starting a translation agency. The entire program is listed below.

It is intended for those who consider starting their freelance careers. There are both pros and contras to either type of professional activities (inhouse vs. freelance) as well as specific issues to freelancing which we often discover only after we start – and what’s worse, we find that we don’t like them! The result is wasted time and effort.

It will deal with the freelance environment, including general description of the scope of responsibilities (and their comparison vs. inhouse position); the negative aspects of freelancing; psychological implications; consequences for health; and, as opposed, the benefits, such as possibility to manage one’s workload and income, shift one’s working time and adjust schedule, etc. We'll also try to have a look at common perception of (translation) freelancing and see if it's true or wrong.

The ultimate purpose of this video is to provide information to potential freelancers so they could make perfectly informed decisions, whether negative or positive.

The first and foremost task (and often a challenge) for every novice freelance translator is finding clients. That's wxactly what we'll be talking about.

We'll discuss types of clients and see how they differ; talk about the decision-making process characteristic for various clients; have a look at the sometines longish "production chain" - all of that so that we could easily develop strategies of getting clients and tactics for working with them.

The ultimate purpose of the session is to arm freelance translators with "weapons" necessary to turn into expert client hunters :-)
