English to Bengali: Excerpt from interview with Marcella Jenney, Administrator ATA, Spanish Language Division
Source text - English Jen: I was so excited following your presentation at AAIT’s conference! It was not only inspiring but also filled with great information. Would you mind telling me a little bit about your background?
Marcela: Well, I am from Colombia. I came to the U.S. in 1990, so I have been here for 21 years, almost half of my life. I attended Georgia State University, where I received a certificate in translation. Then I moved to Knoxville, Tennessee, where I spent five years as a freelancer. Incidentally, freelancing is something I recommend highly to translators and students. Start translating as soon as possible—
you need a lot of experience. After freelancing, I worked as a localization project manager for Citibank for three years. After that, I opened my own business, Contextual Communications, in 2003, which I sold in 2007. At the time, I was witnessing a huge change in the industry I noticed it was becoming more and
more difficult to differentiate one’s self as a translator. So, I elected to get out of the industry and start working on the industry. It is such a beautiful and complex profession, but it is underestimated and undervalued. I decided I would teach translators how to look at themselves as a business, and as a product competing in an open market. To hone my expertise in that area, I earned my MBA in marketing
in 2010, which helped me get to where I am today.
Jen: Why do you want to change the industry?
Marcela: I have dedicated almost half of my life to the industry, and I have played various roles in it—from translator to localization project manager to business owner to director of sales— so I see the struggles that the industry is going through, especially with regard to new technologies and the Internet. Clients, the buyers of translation services, are more sophisticated because they are getting smarter. For
instance, they know about translation memory tools. As Renato Beninatto, chief marketing officer at Moravia IT, says, “We have over-educated them, and sharing our secrets was the worst mistake of the industry.” To be able to compete, we need to learn what makes us unique and different. How can we create a strong brand and use social media to communicate our message? As I said during my presentation, we need to know our purpose. Why are we doing what we are doing, and how can we
better contribute to that purpose? I took on as my mission at least to plant the seeds of some kind of movement to raise awareness.
Jen: What are the top three things that translators are doing that they should not be doing?
Marcela: Number 1: Translators are all talking about “quality.” Everyone offers quality. This is not a differentiator in the market. As professionals, we are supposed to give quality; it is expected to be included in the price. Number 2: Talking about processes is also a big mistake. Clients do not care how we do it. And finally, Number 3: Translators do not think enough about the client. Four of the top 10 buying motivators are: to save money, to make money, to gain competitive advantage, and to create market share. So, as translators we have to wonder how can we help our clients make money. How can we help them save money? We need to focus less on ourselves and more on our clients. What are they walking away with when they work with us? It is about how we can help them. Stop talking about quality and processes. Concentrate instead on your clients! We must start seeing ourselves as a business and find ways to develop the characteristics that make us unique.
Jen: I understand that we need to be a brand, but how do we do that? What made you unique? What was your brand identity when you were a translator?
Marcela: When I was a translator, it was not such a competitive environment. We did not have to fight for
projects like we do now. One thing that helped me a lot was that I was Colombian and spoke Colombian
Spanish. So that was my differentiator. I also had a promise of value. Warning: when you promise something, you have to follow through! My clients knew that I always delivered on time, that I was reliable, that they could count on me, and that I would always go the extra mile to find the right translation. They were confident that they would get a good translation out of me.

This first chapter will provide you with some basic foundational material you will need to progress through the rest of the book. In this chapter you will be introduced to the history of C , the basics of the language, and how to use variables and write expressions in C . These fundamental concepts are the essential building blocks that you will use to create C programs throughout the rest of this book.
C , as the name implies, is essentially based on the C programming language. Therefore, it seems prudent to begin with a brief history of C. The C programming language was devised in the early 1970s at Bell Laboratories by Dennis Ritchie. It was designed as a system implementation language for the Unix operating system. The history of C and Unix are closely intertwined. For this reason a lot of Unix programming is done with C.
Work on what would become C began in 1979. The initial version was called “C with Classes.” That name did not work out well, and was replaced with C . The first version of C was used internally in AT&T in August 1983. The first commercial implementation was released in 1985. The C language standards are now handled by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), and the International Standards Organization (ISO). This is why you often hear pure C referred to as ANSI Standard C , or ISO Standard C
You can see that the C programming language was developed first, C was developed later. You might be asking yourself what, exactly, is C and how does it relate to C? The answer is that C is essentially C taken to the next level. The most obvious difference between the two is that C supports object orientation (more on that later on.). However, C sports many other improvements over C. For example, C handles strings better than C, and has a more robust exception handling. (Exception handling refers to a program’s ability to handle unexpected errors. What if the user inputs a zero then tries to divide by that number? This is an exception, how your code handles it is exception handling.)
C code will compile fine in most C compilers, but the reverse is not true. C code will not necessarily compile in a C compiler. You may be wondering what is meant by the word code. Code is essentially the series of programming commands that a programmer writes. All the commands that make up a program are the source code for that program.
C supports all C commands and also has many additions. You may frequently see old style C code mixed in with C code, especially in programs written by programmers who originally started in C.
How to write a C program
There are several ways to write a C program. You could simply open your favorite text editor, such as notepad, write your program, save it, and then use a command line compiler to compile the program. If you have a commercial development tool such as Borland C Builder or Microsoft Visual C , then you must follow the instructions for that particular software package. A command line compiler is one that is executed from the command line. This, of course, begs the question of what is a command line. When you enter commands at a DOS prompt (Microsoft Windows or Shell (Linux/Unix) you are typing commands on a line, thus the term “command line.” You literally type in commands one line at a time.
To use a command line compiler, like the free C compiler from Borland, you simply type the code into a document in any text editor, then save it with a .cpp extension. That .cpp extension stands for C Plus Plus. C files that are done in a text editor are saved with the extension .c, as you might expect.

কি করে একটি সি প্রোগ্রাম লিখবেন

Source text - English New Delhi, Nov. 29: Bengal is one of the worst sufferers from a shortage of Indian Police Service officers, with only a couple of northeastern states, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh and Punjab faring worse. However, Bengal does better when it comes to a shortage of Indian Administrative Service officers, figuring close to the middle of the list. V. Narayanasamy, minister of state for personnel, public grievances and pensions, today released data that show how states with poor law and order situations generally face the worst shortages of IPS officers. Bengal is sixth worst on the list and Sikkim is best placed at 6.25 per cent, which means the hill state has 93.75 per cent of its sanctioned strength of IPS officers. Across India, the total sanctioned strength is 4,730 but the actual number of IPS officers is 3,475—the shortfall being 1,255 or 26.53 per cent. Still, the figure is healthier compared with the recent past, with the home ministry under Shivaraj Patil and then P. Chidambaram having pushed for an increased cadre strength.
The annual IPS batch size for direct recruitment was increased from 88 to 103 in 2005, to 130 in 2008 and to 150 in 2009. The Centre has now decided to induct another 80 IPS officers annually from the paramilitary forces through a competitive examination.
The authorised strength of IAS officers countrywide is 6,154 but the actual number is 4,377 — the shortfall being 1,777 or 28.87 per cent. At 27.70, Bengal is close to the national average. Jharkhand is worst placed, its shortfall of 48.07 per cent perhaps suggesting the new state didn’t get its share of IAS officers when it was carved out of Bihar. But Bihar doesn’t fare much better, coming third-worst at 38.65 per cent.

Source text - Bengali শঙ্কর একেবারে অজ পাড়াগাঁয়ের ছেলে। এই বার সে সবে এফ. এ. পাশ দিয়ে গ্রামে বসেচে। কাজের মধ্যে সকালে বন্ধুবান্ধবদের বাড়িতে গিয়ে আড্ডা দেওয়া, দুপুরে আহারান্তে লম্বা ঘুম, বিকেলে পালঘাটের বাঁওড়ে মাছ ধরতে যাওয়া।
সারা বৈশাখ এভাবে কাটাবার পরে একদিন তার মা ডেকে বললেন—শোন একটা কথা বলি শঙ্কর। তোর বাবার শরীর ভালো নয়। এ অবস্থায় আর তোর পড়াশুনো হবে কী করে? কে খরচ দেবে? এইবার একটা কিছু কাজের চেষ্টা দ্যাখ।
মায়ের কথাটা শঙ্করকে ভাবিয়ে তুললে। সত্যি তার বাবার শরীর আজ কমাস থেকে খুব খারাপ যাচ্ছে। কলকাতার খরচ দেওয়া তাঁর পক্ষে ক্রমেই অসম্ভব হয়ে উঠেচে। অথচ করবেই বা কী শঙ্কর? এখন কি তাকে কেউ চাকরি দেবে? চেনেই বা সে কাকে?
আমরা যে সময়ের কথা বলচি, ইউরোপের মহাযুদ্ধ বাধতে তখনও পাঁচ বছর দেরি। ১৯০৯ সালের কথা। তখন চাকরির বাজার এতটা খারাপ ছিল না। শঙ্করদের গ্রামের এক ভদ্রলোক শ্যামনগরে না নৈহাটীতে পাটের কলে চাকরি করতেন। শঙ্করের মা তাঁর স্ত্রীকে ছেলের চাকরির কথা বলে এলেন, যাতে তিনি স্বামীকে বলে শঙ্করের জন্য পাটের কলে একটা কাজ যোগাড় করে দিতে পারেন। ভদ্রলোক পরদিন বাড়ি বয়ে বলতে এলেন যে শঙ্করের চাকরির জন্যে সাধ্যমতো চেষ্টা করবেন।
শঙ্কর সাধারণ ধরনের ছেলে নয়। স্কুলে পড়বার সময় সে বরাবর খেলাধুলোতে প্রথম হয়ে এসেছে। সেবার মহকুমার এক্জিবিসনের সময় হাইজাম্পে সে প্রথম স্থান অধিকার করে মেডেল পায়। ফুটবলে অমন সেন্টার ফরওয়ার্ড ও অঞ্চলে তখন কেউ ছিল না। সাঁতার দিতে তার জুড়ি খুঁজে মেলা ভার। গাছে উঠতে, ঘোড়ায় চড়তে, বক্সিং-এ সে অত্যন্ত নিপুণ। কলকাতায় পড়বার সময় ওয়াই. এম. সি.এ-তে সে রীতিমতো বক্সিং অভ্যাস করেচে। এই সব কারণে পরীক্ষায় সে তত ভালো করতে পারেনি, দ্বিতীয় বিভাগে উত্তীর্ণ হয়েছিল।
কিন্তু তার একটি বিষয়ে অদ্ভুত জ্ঞান ছিল। তার বাতিক ছিল যত রাজ্যের ম্যাপ ঘাঁটা ও বড়-বড় ভূগোলের বই পড়া। ভূগোলের অঙ্ক কষতে সে খুব মজবুত। আমাদের দেশের আকাশে যে সব নক্ষত্রমণ্ডল ওঠে, তা সে প্রায় সবই চেনে—ওটা কালপুরুষ, ওটা সপ্তর্ষি, ওটা ক্যাসিওপিয়া, ওটা বৃশ্চিক। কোন মাসে কোনটা ওঠে, কোন দিকে ওঠে—সব ওর নখ-দর্পণে। আকাশের দিকে চেয়ে তখনি বলে দেবে। আমাদের দেশের বেশি ছেলে যে এসব জানে না, এ কথা নিঃসন্দেহে বলা যেতে পারে।
এবার পরীক্ষা দিয়ে কলকাতা থেকে আসবার সময় সে একরাশ ওই সব বই কিনে এনেছে, নির্জনে বসে প্রায়ই পড়ে আর কী ভাবে ওই জানে। তারপর এল তার বাবার অসুখ, সংসারের দারিদ্র্য এবং সঙ্গে-সঙ্গে মায়ের মুখে পাটকলে চাকরি নেওয়ার জন্যে অনুরোধ। কী করবে সে? সে নিতান্ত নিরুপায়। মা-বাপের মলিন মুখ সে দেখতে পারবে না। অগ্যতা তাকে পাটের কলেই চাকরি নিতে হবে। কিন্তু জীবনের স্বপ্ন তাহলে ভেঙে যাবে, তাও সে যে না বোঝে এমন নয়। ফুটবলের নাম করা সেন্টার ফরওয়ার্ড, জেলার হাইজাম্প চ্যাম্পিয়ান, নামজাদা সাঁতারু শঙ্কর হবে কিনা শেষে পাটের কলের বাবু? নিকেলের বইয়ের আকারের কৌটোতে খাবার কি পান নিয়ে ঝাড়ন পকেটে করে তাকে সকালের ভোঁ বাজতেই ছুটতে হবে কলে, আবার বারোটার সময় এসে দুটো খেয়ে নিয়েই আবার রওনা, ওদিকে সেই ছ’টার ভোঁ বাজলেই ছুটি। তার তরুণ তাজা মন এর কথা ভাবতেই পারে না যে! ভাবতে গেলেই তার সারা দেহ-মন বিদ্রোহী হয়ে ওঠে—রেসের ঘোড়া শেষকালে ছ্যাকড়া গাড়ি টানতে যাবে?
সন্ধ্যার বেশি দেরি নেই। নদীর ধারে নির্জনে বসে-বসে শঙ্কর এইসব কথাই ভাবছিল। তার মন উড়ে যেতে চায় পৃথিবীর দূর, দূর দেশে—শত দুঃসাহসিক কাজের মাঝখানে। লিভিংস্টোন, স্টানলির মতো, হ্যারি জনস্টন, মার্কো পোলো, রবিনসন ক্রুসোর মতো। এর জন্যে ছেলেবেলা থেকে সে নিজেকে তৈরি করেচে—যদিও এ কথা ভেবে দেখেনি অন্য দেশের ছেলেদের পক্ষে যা ঘটতে পারে, বাঙালী ছেলেদের পক্ষে তা ঘটা এক রকম অসম্ভব। তারা তৈরি হয়েছে কেরানি, স্কুলমাস্টার, ডাক্তার বা উকিল হবার জন্যে। অজ্ঞাত অঞ্চলের অজ্ঞাতপথে পাড়ি দেওয়ার আশা তাদের পক্ষে নিতান্তই দুরাশা।
প্রদীপের মৃদু আলোয় সেদিন রাত্রে সে ওয়েস্টমার্কের বড় ভূগোলের বইখানা খুলে পড়তে বসল। এই বইখানার একটা জায়গা তাকে বড় মুগ্ধ করে। সেটা হচ্ছে প্রসিদ্ধ জার্মান ভূপর্যটক অ্যাণ্টন হাউপ্টমান লিখিত আফ্রিকার একটা বড় পর্বত—মাউনটেন অফ দি মুন (চাঁদের পাহার) আরোহণের অদ্ভুত বিবরণ। কতবার সে এটা পড়েচে। পড়বার সময় কতবার ভেবেছে হের হাউপ্টমানের মতো সেও একদিন যাবে মাউনটেন অফ দি মুন জয় করতে।
স্বপ্ন! সত্যিকার চাঁদের পাহাড় দূরের জিনিসই চিরকাল। চাঁদের পাহাড় বুঝি পৃথিবীতে নামে?
সে রাত্রে বড় অদ্ভুত একটা স্বপ্ন দেখল সে:
চারধারে ঘন বাঁশের জঙ্গল। বুনো হাতির দল মড়-মড় করে বাঁশ ভাঙছে। সে আর একজন কে তার সঙ্গে, দুজনে একটা প্রকাণ্ড পাহাড়ে উঠেছে। চারধারের দৃশ্য ঠিক হাউপ্টমানের লেখা মাউনটেন অফ দি মুনের দৃশ্যের মতো। সেই ঘন বাঁশ বন, সেই পরগাছা ঝোলানো বড়-বড় গাছ, নিচে পচাপাতার রাশ, মাঝে- মাঝে পাহাড়ের খালি গা, আর দূরে গাছপালার ফাঁকে জ্যোৎস্নায় ধোয়া শাদা ধবধবে চিরতুষারে ঢাকা পর্বত শিখরটি এক-একবার দেখা যাচ্ছে, এক-একবার বনের আড়ালে চাপা পড়চে। পরিষ্কার আকাশে দু-একটি তারা এখানে-ওখানে। একবার সত্যিই সে যেন বুনো হাতির গর্জন শুনতে পেল•••সমস্ত বনটা কেঁপে উঠল। এত বাস্তব বলে মনে হল সেটা, যেন সেই ডাকেই তার ঘুম ভেঙে গেল। বিছানার উপর উঠে বসল, ভোর হয়ে গিয়েচে, জানালার ফাঁক দিয়ে দিনের আলো ঘরের মধ্যে এসেছে।
Translation - English Shankar belongs to what can be considered a backward and remote village. He has just completed his F.A. exams. All his day’s work involved was idle chatter with friends, a long nap after lunch and trips to Palghat in the afternoon to catch Baorey fish.
After having spend the entire month of Boishak in this fashion, one day his mother said, “Lister Shankar, there’s something I need to tell you. Your father is not keeping well. How can we afford your studies? Who will bear the expenses? You should look for some work now.”
What his mother said made Shankar wonder. It was true his father was keeping very poor health these last few months. It was getting more and more difficult for him to bear the expenses for staying in Kolkata. But what could Shankar do? Would anyone give him a job now? Who could he turn to?
We are talking of the time when the World War in Europe was still five years away. It was 1909. The job market was not that bad. There was a gentleman in Shankar’s village that used to work in a jute mill at Shyamnagar or maybe Noihati. Shankar’s mother told his wife about her son, hoping perhaps he could find Shankar a job at the jute mill. The gentleman came the next day to say he would do his best for Shankar.
Shankar was no ordinary boy. At school he always came first at sports. Once he came first at high jump at the district exhibition and got a medal to show for it. In football, there was no centre-forward who could hold a lamp to him in the area. In swimming he was second to none. He used to do quite nicely at climbing trees, horse riding and boxing. While studying at Kolkata he used to practice boxing regularly. For these reasons he could not do that well in his exams, he was able to secure only second division.
But he had knowledge about a strange subject. He had this thing about maps of all kinds and reading books on geography that bordered on monomania. He was an expert in calculations related to geography. He knew almost all the stars that could be seen in our sky – that is the Orion, that there are the stars of Ursa major, that is Cassiopeia and there is Scorpio. He could even tell you in which part of the sky they could be seen and in which month, he knew them like the back of his hand. It was for sure that not many boys in our country knew this.
Coming from Kolkata after the examinations were over, he had purchased a load of these books which he poured over in seclusion and thought of God knows what. And then came his father’s illness, domestic impoverishment and his mother’s request to look for a job at the jute mill. What could he do? There was no way out. He could not bear to see the dark faces of his parents. Therefore he had to take a job at the jute mill. But that would shatter his dreams; it was not that he did not realize that too. The famous centre-forward in football, the district high jump champion, the renowned swimmer that he was and to turn into a clerk at a jute mill? To run with the morning siren with his nickel container of food or betel leaves to the mill and to return at twelve for lunch and then run back again and finally to be released with the siren at six in the evening. His youthful, fresh mind could not accept this. Whenever he thought of this, his body and mind would revolt. A race horse to finally pull a carriage?
Evening was not far away. Shankar was sitting on the river bank, these thoughts passing through his mind. His mind wants to fly off to far, far away countries, amongst bold and daring ventures. Like Livingstone, Stanley, like Harry Johnston, Marco Polo, Robinson Crusoe. He has prepared himself for this from childhood – although it had never crossed his mind that what was possible for boys from other countries, the same was practically impossible for boys from Bengal. They are born to be clerks, school teachers, doctors or lawyers. Embarking for unknown places to chart out new territories was for them a futile desire.
Sitting in the dim light of the lamp that night, he opened the large book on geography by Westmark and started to read. A place in this book fascinated him. It was the account of the illustrious German globe-trotter Anton Hauptmann about the strange description of ascending a large mountain in Africa called Mountain Of The Moon. He has read it many times. And while reading he had thought of ascending the Mountain Of The Moon just as Herr Hauptmann did.
A dream! Real Mountain Of The Moon was far off forever. How could that descend to earth?
That night he had a very strange dream:
A dense jungle of bamboo trees were all round him. A herd of wild elephants were breaking bamboos with a wrenching sound. He and someone else were climbing a huge mountain. The scenery around him was exactly the way it was described in Hauptmann’s book Mountain Of The Moon. The same dense bamboo jungle, the same huge trees with parasitic weeds hanging from them, pile of rotten leaves below them, the bare surface of the mountain seen at times, and far away through the trees the moon light drenched pure white peak of the mountain under permanent snow could be seen now and then. A few stars here and there on a clear cloudless sky. Once it seemed he could really hear the bellowing of wild elephants …. The entire forest shook. It all seemed so real, as if that was what woke him up. He sat up on the bed, it was already morning and the sunlight streamed in through the windows into his room.
