English term or phrase: Fracking operations have been known to contaminate groundwater
Hola buenas tardes!

Me surjió una duda con respecto a esta oración: "Fracking operations deplete water, and have been known to contaminate groundwater".

During the fracking process, millions of litres of water, thousands of litres of chemicals and thousands of pounds of sand are injected
underground at very high pressure in order to create fractures in the rock allowing gas to flow up wells. Fracking operations deplete water sources, and have been known to contaminate groundwater with methane and undisclosed chemicals. Questions have also been raised about the safety of fracking wastewater disposal.

Saludos!

have been known to contaminate
se conocen instancias/operaciones ... han sido contaminadas

Explanation:
Focusing first on the main problem here:

Fracking operations have been known to contaminate groundwater
--> (por ejemplo)

The English says "(fracking operations) have been known to contaminate groundwater", which means that it is known that this problem has occurred *in some cases* . But Valeria’s translation "se conoce que contaminan las aguas subterráneas" strongly suggests that contamination *always* occurs.

A second problem concerns the English "undisclosed chemicals". It's not the chemicals themselves that are not revealed (eg: drums of toxic slurry) - it's their chemical composition and/or the potential risk they pose to the envoronment.

Perhaps something like: "productos quimicos cuya naturaleza no ha sido divulgada"
